Omaha, NE – The Hastings College softball team recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2014 with its 1-0 and 4-0 doubleheader wins over College of Saint Mary on Wednesday afternoon. Back in 2014, Hastings recorded three straight shutouts by beating York 12-0 and 10-0 and then defeated Doane 3-0 before the streak ended.
Game one was a battle between Kyleigh Boever and Megan Garcia as a pitchers dual broke out. Boever and Garcia kept both offenses at bay giving up a total of nine total hits.
The Flames did threaten early having runners in scoring position in the first inning but Boever recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
From there the game carried into extra innings and eventually into the 10th where the international rule came into play as both teams started with a runner at second base. Head Coach Troy Baker had Katyn Kappler lay down the sacrifice bunt to move Macie Mays to third. Lexie Mudloff then hit a liner out to right which was deep enough to allow Mays to score to make it 1-0.
CSM would then have its chance as two fielder's choice plays ended up loading the bases for the Flames with just one out and the game remaining 1-0. Boever then coaxed an infield pop up from Macy Homes and the struck out Kayla Reed to end the game as the Lady Broncos escaped with the 1-0 10 inning victory.
Boever went all 10.0 innings giving up no runs on just five hits while striking out nine. Mudloff recorded the lone RBI in game one.
Game two started out differently but still turned into another pitchers dual.
Instead of waiting 10 innings to score, Hastings would strike first in the top of the first as Mays doubled to right center and then Elana Gerhard brought her home with a RBI single to right center. From there, Hastings turned the ball over to Sophia Haverkamp and she would also stymie the Flames hitters.
Through the first five innings, Haverkamp surrendered just two hits and never allowed more than one runner to reach base. It seemed as if this game may have a similar score line as game one as CSM again had no answer to what Haverkamp brought to the table but this time, the Lady Bronco offense added some insurance in the seventh.
With one out, Mays began the inning with a walk and then Gerhard singled to right. Lauren Schneider then ripped a double to center allowing pinch runner Sam Skinner to advance to third and Nicole Halsey to score to make it 2-0. Mudloff then picked up her second and third RBI of the day as she singled home Skinner and Schneider for the 4-0 lead.
That was more than enough as Haverkamp sat the Flames down in order to win the game 4-0.
Haverkamp went 7.0 innings giving up no runs on just four hits while striking out two. Hastings finished with 12 hits with Mays leading the way going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Gerhard and Mudloff each finished with two hits while Mudloff had two RBIs.
Hastings improves to 7-11 (2-0) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Mar. 25 as Doane comes to town for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 pm out at the Smith Softball Complex.
