Lindsborg, KS – The Hastings College softball team lost both of its games on Saturday 8-7 to the Bethany Swedes.
The Lady Broncos took advantage of an early error which allowed Macy Mays to reach first and she would later be brought home when Elana Gerhard singled to make it 1-0 in the first. Hastings moved its lead to 4-0 when Sydney Schelkopf picked up a RBI single in the third and then Mays reached on another Swede error which allowed Isabel Tanabe and Shelkopf to score.
Bethany came back to tie things at 4-4 but Lexie Mudloff put HC ahead in the sixth with a solo shot to go up 5-4. Mudloff came up big in the seventh with a two RBI single that plated Lauren Schneider and Mays to open up a 7-5 lead going into the final half inning.
Unfortunately, an error would prove to be costly in the seventh as the Swedes scored three runs to walk-off with the 8-7 game one victory.
Mudloff led the way by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Tanabe, Schelkopf and Katyn Kapper each finished with two hits.
Game two had a completely different take as Bethany jumped out to a 7-1 lead after just one inning of play. Hastings would slowly creep back into the game as Mudloff homered in the third to make it a 7-3 game. Then in the fifth, Taylor Stuhr singled home Sam Skinner followed by a Kapper RBI single to score Mudloff to make it 8-5.
The Lady Broncos would continue to make things interesting as Gerhard led the seventh off with a walk and then Mudloff homered again to make it 8-7. Hastings would eventually get runners on first and third with two outs but Tanabe would ground out to end the game.
Mudloff definitely had herself a day as she went 3-for-3 with five RBIs in game two while also scoring three times. Skinner, Mays and Kappler each had two hits in the loss.
Hastings is now 1-5 on the year and will be back in action Sunday Feb. 19 hitting the road to take on Kansas Wesleyan with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1:00 pm in Salina, KS.
