Softball Picks Up First Win of 2023 With Split
North Newton, KS – The Hastings College softball team picked up a split against Bethel on Saturday winning game one 5-4 before falling in game two 16-8 (6 innings).

North Newton, KS – The Hastings College softball team picked up a split against Bethel on Saturday winning game one 5-4 before falling in game two 16-8 (6 innings).
The Lady Broncos fell behind in game one 3-0 early on before getting its bats going in the fourth. Macy Mays opened the inning with a single to center as the ball would get past the center fielder allowing Mays to get to third with no outs. Elana Gerhard brought her home with a RBI grounder to third and would reach safely on the error. Hastings now trailed 3-1 but would not score again in the inning.
The game moved into the fifth inning as HC loaded the bases with no outs. The Threshers would get Mays and Gerhard out with no damage but Lauren Schneider ripped a three RBI single down the right field line to put Hastings up 4-3. The Lady Broncos added one more run in the sixth when Isabel Tanabe hit a fly ball to right where the right fielder dropped the ball allowing Rayleigh Guyer to score to make it 5-3 heading to the seventh.
Kyleigh Boever would give up one run in the bottom of the seventh but would get Marissa Harrison to strikeout to end the game as Hastings picked up win No. 1 of the 2023 season.
Sydney Schelkopf led the way at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Schneider went 1-for-4 but had the key three RBIs in the win. Tanabe, Mays, Taylor Stuhr and Katyn Kappler each had a hit.
Boever pitched a complete game 7.0 innings giving up four runs on six hits while striking out eight Threshers. Only two of the runs given up were earned.
Game two turned into a shootout as both pithing staffs struggled in the game as the teams combined for 24 runs and 25 hits as the Threshers won 16-8 in six innings.
Bethel opened up an early 7-0 lead before Hastings would score four runs in the third as Mays picked up three RBIs on a double to right center and Stuhr doubled to center to plate Mays to make it 7-4.
The Threshers then grew the lead to 12-5 but the Lady Broncos would try to make things interesting in the sixth as Guyer picked up a two RBI double to left along with a RBI from Tanabe on her double. Hastings now trailed 12-8 but Bethel ended the game by scoring four runs in the bottom half to win in 16-8.
Tanabe went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored while Schelkopf went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Gerhard also went 2-for-4.
Hastings moves to 1-3 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Feb. 18 hitting the road to take on Bethany (KS) in a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 pm in Lindsborg, KS.
