Men's Basketball Loses Tight Contest to Concordia

Concordia got off to a strong start, taking a 18-4 lead through the first five minutes. Trailing by 16, senior Cameron Coraggio and junior Ben Boudreau hit from three. Senior DaRon Hall drilled a long two to get the lead down to eight. Hastings later got within six on a couple of threes by sophomore Maverick Binder and Boudreau at 24-18 with 9:48 left in the half.
Binder continued the run with a midrange jumper and a kickout to sophomore Micah Hinrichs for a three, making it 26-23. The Bulldogs scored five unanswered points, but Hastings countered with a 5-0 run, ending with a three from freshman Riley Bombeck at the 4:56 mark. Hall and Coraggio each scored to keep the deficit at three. Hall made two free throws in the final minute to get Hastings within one, but Concordia took a 38-35 lead going to the half.
Senior Myles Simon scored the opening basket of the third quarter, but the next eight of the next ten points went to Concordia to go up 46-39. The Bulldogs later took a 52-40 lead at the 15:22 mark on a three. The lead grew to 15 on an and-one, but Coraggio cut into the lead with a three, as Hastings trailed 62-53 halfway through the second half following a Hall triple.
Concordia grew the lead back to 14 with 8:52 left, then free throws by Hall and Boudreau brought the Broncos back within 10. Binder put in a floater to get the deficit to eight with 4:55 to go and Coraggio made it 74-69 on a corner three. With Concordia up six, Hall completed a three-point play with 2:15 remaining. Boudreau trimmed the lead to two on a three-pointer and after a stop, Hall scored on a putback to tie it at 79 with 32 seconds left. The Bulldogs scored on an and-one with 2.5 seconds to go up three and the Broncos were unable to get a shot off, falling 82-79.
Concordia shot 57 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. Hastings shot 47 percent from the field and 38 percent from three. The Bulldogs held a 37-27 advantage on the glass. Hall ended with 22 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Binder had 15 points, four assists, and three rebounds, while Boudreau had 15 points and five assists. Coraggio came off the bench and had 15 points on 3-4 from downtown.
Hastings will take on #1-seed Morningside at 7pm in the GPAC quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 25 following Doane's victory over Midland earlier today to claim the eighth seed.
