(Austin, TX) – In the first of two games of their Texas trip, the men's basketball team lost 83-67 at Huston-Tillotson on Tuesday night.
Senior Myles Simon scored the first five Hastings points, putting the Broncos ahead 5-4 three minutes in. The Rams went on a 20-5 run from there to go up 24-10 with 12 minutes to go. Baskets from junior Makhiah Tarver and senior Cameron Coraggio got Hastings within 11 at the halfway point of the opening half.
Trailing 36-18 with 5:49 remaining, sophomore Maverick Binder hit a three and another jumper on their next possession to trim the lead to 13 at 36-23. Huston-Tillotson would score nine of the next 11 points to go up by 20 with 2:26 left, but Hastings closed strong. Senior DaRon Hall made a pair of free throws, then junior Ben Boudreau's steal led to two points at the line. A takeaway by Hall turned into two more Boudreau free throws, as the Rams held a 45-30 halftime lead.
The Rams shot 60 percent in the first half compared to Hastings' 36 percent. Binder led the Broncos in scoring with seven points.
Huston-Tillotson scored the first basket of the second half, but a 7-0 Bronco run got them within 10 at the 13:57 mark with field goals from Boudreau, Hall, and Binder. The Rams responded with a run of their own, as they went up 60-41 with 9:30 left in the half.
Down 61-43, Hastings started to make their run. Boudreau and Coraggio scored inside, then after two Ram free throws, Binder hit a three. With Hastings continuing to get stops defensively, Boudreau scored on a second-chance basket and a layup by Binder one minute later made the deficit only nine. Binder splashed another three after a steal by Hall, making the score 63-57 with 6:06 to go.
The Rams slowed the run with a timeout and scored on their next possession. Hastings was able to get it back to a six-point game on a pair of Hall free throws, but Huston-Tillotson scored the next seven points to go back up 13 with 3:07 left. The Rams would ultimately get the win, 83-67.
Huston-Tillotson shot 50 percent from the field and from three-point range, in addition to holding Hastings to 38 percent from the field and 23 percent from behind the arc. Hastings outrebounded the Rams 42-28 overall, including 29-14 in the second half alone, but 17 turnovers by the Broncos proved to be too much to overcome.
Binder finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Boudreau had 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Hall chipped in with 13 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.
Up next, Hastings will conclude their Texas trip on Thursday, Dec. 18 at Texas Wesleyan, with tip-off set for 2pm.
