Hall's 34 Points Not Enough in 1-Point Loss to Briar Cliff

Hastings scored four points early, getting two free throws from junior Ben Boudreau and a layup from Hall to make it four all, then Briar Cliff responded with an 8-0 run. Senior Cameron Coraggio capped a 6-0 Bronco run to get within two at 12-10 with 13:13 to go. With the Chargers up 19-12, sophomore Micah Hinrichs drilled a three, as Hastings trailed by four halfway through the period.
Trailing 23-19, Hall drove the lane on back-to-back possessions, scoring both times and completed the second one as a three-point play to put Hastings up one, 24-23, with 6:29 left in the first half. Junior Owen Wright completed the 7-0 run with two of his own, then Briar Cliff responded with five quick points. The teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half and the Chargers led 36-33 at the half.
Four of the first five points of the second half went to the Chargers and while Hall scored eight quick points, Briar Cliff was able to extend the lead to eight less than five minutes in. Hall elevated in the paint for two more, as the Chargers held a 57-50 lead with 9:43 remaining.
Freshman Riley Bombeck and senior Myles Simon scored in close to cut the lead to three, and Simon then made two from the line. A Charger three-point play pushed the lead back to four with 7:07 to go. Down six, Hall brought the deficit to four on a couple of occasions, then he drove inside to get within two at the 2:39 mark.
Hall and Boudreau had a couple of drives under a minute that would have tied it, but Briar Cliff forced misses on both. The Chargers were fouled, but missed the front end of the one-and-one, giving Hastings an opportunity with 17 seconds left. The corner three by sophomore Maverick Binder was short and Briar Cliff went up four with four seconds left at the foul line. Hall hit a three at the buzzer to make it a 66-65 final.
Hastings shot 46 percent from the field, but were held to 19 percent from three. Briar Cliff shot 43 percent from the field and 30 percent from three. Hastings held a 36-33 advantage on the boards.
Hall had 34 points on 15-25 shooting, while Simon came off the bench to contribute nine points, four rebounds, and three assists. Boudreau led Hastings in rebounds with nine, along with seven points. Binder chipped in with two points and eight rebounds.
