Men's Basketball's Strong Second Half Leads to 81-79 Win
(Hastings, NE) - Led by a near triple-double of 32 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists by senior DaRon Hall, the men’s basketball team had a 15-2 run late in the second half to earn the 81-79 victory over Dordt.

The Defenders had it going early, drilling four triples to take a 12-0 lead and force a Hastings timeout less than four minutes in. Sophomore Micah Hinrichs answered with eight of Hastings' next 11 points, as they got back within one at the 14:31 mark. Dordt went back up nine at 24-15, then Hall stopped the momentum with a three with 10:15 left in the half.
Hall scored two more baskets soon after to get the lead down to one with 5:59 to go. Down 33-28, Hall came back with two more and Hinrichs made one of two free throws. Hall was able to get another field goal before the half came to a close, but the Defenders took a 38-33 halftime lead.
Dordt shot 50 percent in the opening half to Hastings' 48. Dordt was 44 percent from deep compared to 50 percent for Hastings. Hall had 13 points, six assists, and five rebounds in the first half, while Hinrichs added nine points.
Hastings scored on their first two possessions - a two from Hinrichs and a three by sophomore Maverick Binder to make it 40-38. Dordt would go up 48-42 with 15:04 left, then Binder scored inside and Hinrichs drilled a three to get back within one. Hastings grabbed its first lead of the game on a two-handed jam from junior Owen Wright at 49-48 with 12:56 left.
After a stop on their next defensive trip, Binder drained a three and Wright scored again to go up six and force a Defender timeout. Hastings would not allow Dordt to retake the lead the rest of the way, though Dordt did tie the game at 60 with 8:08 remaining.
Hastings went on a 15-2 run over the next few minutes, beginning with a Hall three-point play. After a two from Dordt, Hinrichs drilled a three and Hall scored five quick points. Junior Ben Boudreau made two at the line and a steal by Hinrichs turned into two at the other end by Hall to take a 75-62 lead with 2:46 left.
Dordt managed to get back within single digits with 57 seconds left and got within six with 36 seconds remaining. Hastings then missed a couple of free throws and Dordt came down and hit a three to get within three with 11 seconds left. Sophomore Riley Bombeck made it a two-possession game by making one out of two at the line. Dordt would score on their last trip to cut it to two, but Hastings threw it long on the inbound pass to run out the clock and secure the 81-79 win.
Hastings shot 62 percent from the field in the second half and 50 percent from three, while holding the Defenders to 41 percent overall and 22 percent from three. Hall had 19 points and five assists in the second half alone, along with 14 points by Hinrichs.
For the game, Hastings shot 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. Dordt was 45 percent overall and 33 percent from three. Hall was 12-16 from the field in his 32-point outing - the most he has had as a Bronco, along with 10 rebounds and nine assists. Hinrichs was the other high-scorer, finishing with a career-high 23 points to go along with four rebounds.
