(Bellevue, NE) – One day after their first game of the season, Hastings returned to the court, falling 92-79 to Bellevue.
Junior Myles Simon scored seven of the first nine Bronco points as Hastings pulled ahead 9-5 three minutes in. An 11-0 run keyed by three Bellevue triples put the Bruins up 17-9 with 12 minutes left in the first and stretched it out to a 10-point lead halfway through the first at 21-11.
Bellevue continued to hold their steady lead the rest of the half, leading 38-26 at the 2:37 mark. Sophomore Maverick Binder and senior DaRon Hall each scored before the break, as Hastings trailed 40-30 at the half.
Bellevue scored eight points in the first two minutes of the second half to lead 48-30. Down 17, Simon converted a three-point play and drilled a three to cut it to 11. A three from redshirt-sophomore Micah Hinrichs trimmed it to eight with 14:27 left. Bellevue was able to build the lead back to 14 midway through the second half.
Hall brought Hastings within single digits at nine on a layup and junior Ben Boudreau stepped into a three shortly after to get within six at the 5:37 mark. Still trailing by six with 3:30 left, an 8-0 Bruin run put the game out of reach as part of a 12-5 extended run, eventually winning 92-79.
Both teams shot 50 percent from the field, but the key decider was rebounding, with the Bruins holding a 38-22 advantage over the Broncos. Simon finished with 23 points and Boudreau had 20 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Hall added 19 points off the bench, which outscored Bellevue's bench, 27-11.
Up next, Hastings will play Oklahoma City in McPherson, KS on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 1pm.
