Softball Improves to 4-0 on Florida Trip
Melbourne, FL – The Hastings College softball team picked up two more wins down in Florida first by defeating Northwestern Ohio 10-6 in nine innings before coming from behind to defeat Florida Memorial 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Melbourne, FL – The Hastings College softball team picked up two more wins down in Florida first by defeating Northwestern Ohio 10-6 in nine innings before coming from behind to defeat Florida Memorial 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Racers picked up three runs in the sixth which eventually forced extra innings.
After both teams scored one run in the eighth, the Lady Broncos would break the game open in the ninth as Isabel Tanabe got things going with a RBI single to center to regain the lead at 6-5. Sam Skinner put down a perfect bunt and reached safely which brought up Elana Gerhard. She would reach base due to an error as the bases were loaded for Lauren Schneider.
Schneider smacked a bases clearing double to center as HC now led 9-5. Schneider would be brought home on the Macie Mays RBI double to right as the Lady Broncos went off for five runs in the top of the ninth.
Kyleigh Boever came out in the ninth and after giving up one run, her defense helped her out as Hailee Edgell singled and tried to advance to second only to have Skinner make a quick reaction throw to Tanabe as she tagged out Edgell for the second out. Boever then got Paige Becker to line out to center ending the game as HC had now won five games in a row.
Hastings finished the game with 14 hits as Kappler led the way going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Mays went 3-for-5 with a RBI while Schneider went 2-for-4 with a team high three RBIs.
Game two was against a very good Florida Memorial squad that entered the game with a 17-7 record.
Early on the Lady Lions flexed some muscle opening up a 3-1 lead but the Lady Broncos stayed in the fight. In the fourth inning, Hastings made it 3-2 as Schneider picked up a one out single and then scored on the Taylor Stuhr triple to right.
After FMU picked up a run in the fifth, HC used a bit of small ball to move Tanabe into scoring position where Gerhard brought her home with a single to left to make it 4-3.
Hastings then tied the game in the sixth as Mays coaxed a walk to lead off the inning followed by a walk to Stuhr. Kappler stepped up and singled down the line in left field to plate Mays and tie the game 4-4.
After holding the Lady Lions scoreless in the top of the seventh, Gerhard led the bottom half of the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Gerhard moved to second on a groundout and then moved to third on the Schneider single. Mays would walk things off with a RBI single to right as HC moved to 4-0 on its trip to Florida.
Schneider led the way by going 2-for-3 while Gerhard, Mays, Stuhr and Kappler each had a RBI.
Madison Hemphill went 6.0 innings giving up four runs on six hits in the no decision. Bailey Schmit picked up her first win of the year by pitching a perfect inning in the seventh.
Hastings is now 10-10 on the year and will be back in action Thursday Mar. 21 taking on Dallas Christian at 10:00 am followed by a game with SUNY Coblskill at 12:15 down in Melbourne, FL.
