Hastings Falls Just Short Against DWU
Hastings - An epic game played out between Hastings and Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday at Lloyd Wilson Field as the Tigers scored a late touchdown and then got an interception to defeat the Broncos 34-31.
After the Broncos took the lead for the first time 31-28, DWU went on a 9-play 64-yard drive where the Tigers converted a 4th and 2 and then scored on a 21-yard pass from Dillon Turner to Dus Livingston. DWU would miss the extra point and with 1:23 remaining Hastings trailed 34-31.
After taking a sack, Matt Overmiller (SR/Hastings, NE) would look to find a crossing route only to be picked off by Anthony Cervantes to seal the game for the Tigers.
After struggling to move the ball in the first half, Hastings would find a groove in the second.
Falling behind 28-17, things looked bleak for the Broncos with 8:00 remaining being called for a penalty that put the ball on the 13-yard line. But Overmiller would find Noah Housh (SO/Lincoln, NE) streaking deep on a post pattern as he would take it to the house to make it 28-24 with 7:27 remaining.
On the next Tiger possession, Turner would fumble the ball as it would be recovered by Joe Taulaki (SR/Riverside, CA) in DWU territory and the Broncos would take advantage.
Hastings would go into a hurry up offense marching the ball to the 21 where Jake Fowler (SO/Hastings, NE) would find a big hole up the middle and take it to the house for his third touchdown of the game to make it 28-24 Hastings with 4:24 remaining.
Hastings would be unable to hold DWU off on its final drive.
Fowler finished the game with 64-yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns.
Housh had five catches for 132-yards and a score.
Overmiller finished the game going 23-for-36 for 260 yards and a touchdown along with the one interception.
Erik Wylie (SR/Eagle, ID) finished with a game high 12 tackles including one tackle for a loss of eight yards.
Hastings falls to 2-2 (1-2) on the season and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 4 hitting the road to play Briar Cliff in the Dakota Dome with kick-off set for 1:00 p.m. in Vermillion, SD.
