Crete, NE – The Hastings College men's soccer team found itself down two goals with under two minutes to play but found a way to escape with a 4-4 draw with Doane in an absolutely wild game on Wednesday night.
This game got turned on its head more times than one would want to admit as Doane jumped out to the early lead getting a goal from Brody Mueller in the 7th minute.
The Broncos would find the equalizer in the 14th minute when Ruben Bande was taken down in the box setting up a penalty kick. Bande stepped up and buried his shot to make it 1-1.
The Tigers were not done and came right back when Mueller sent a low cross to the near post that Cesar Gonzalez snuck his shot into the near post to regain the lead at 2-1 in the 28th minute.
Doane added to that lead in the 37th minute when the Broncos turned the ball over with Jerson Calderon finding the back of the net to make it 3-1 heading into the second half.
Hastings did get a couple of shots off early in the second half but then didn't get another for over 20 minutes until Lewis Bowes lined up for a long free kick. Lowed lined up and belted a laser beating the keeper to the upper right 90 for the incredible goal to make it 3-2 in the 74th minute.
Just when you thought the momentum was with the Broncos, Doane came right back as the Tigers built up from a free kick at midfield with a cross eventually finding Guillem Colom as he put it away for the 4-2 lead in the 84th minute.
And just when you thought it was over, the Broncos battled and battled over the final few minute and got to within one in the 89th minute. But that wasn't before Doane had a fifth potential goal wiped away when it looked like the ball was going into the net but a Tiger dove for the ball when he was in the offsides position nullifying a goal and Hastings began the counter. Ayo Mackinde would eventually collect a loose ball 25-yards from goal and let one rip beating the keeper to the near post in the upper 90 to make it 4-3 with 1:50 left to play.
With the Broncos running out of time, Hastings was looking for something desperate to pay off and they got it when Will Turner our hustled the defense and the keeper to Mackinde's throw in the box and then flicked it into the open net for the equalizer with just :44 remaining on the clock. That is how the game would end in a 4-4 tie.
Hastings finished the game with 10 shots compared to eight for Doane while the Broncos also edged out the Tigers 8-to-6 in shots on goal.
Hastings improves to 5-6-3 (4-2-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 14 as No. 20 Concordia comes to town with kickoff set for 5:30 pm out on Lloyd Wilson Field.
