Seward, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team lost an absolute heartbreaker to Concordia 69-67 in overtime on Wednesday night inside Friedrich Arena.
The loss drops the Broncos into a three way tie for first place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with Concordia and Northwestern with one game to go.
HC could not have asked for a better start to this one absolutely dominating the first half. Grady Corrigan would knock down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Broncos an early 12-6 lead. After Reggie Thomas picked up a steal he would make a layup as the Bulldogs called a timeout trailing 14-6.
CUNE would fight back to within one at 21-20 but Nolan Sughroue knocked down a mid-range jumper followed by a Danilo Matovic layup. Then Corrigan knocked down a jumper followed by a Thomas layup as HC began to take control. When the first half ended, Hastings held a 36-22 lead.
That's when CUNE switched to an extended 3-2 defense and slowly climbed back into the game. The Broncos struggled to get much offense going as an 16-point lead began to shrink as the Broncos tried to hold on for dear life.
Eventually Concordia got to within one at 57-56 but Corrigan was open in the corner as he buried a three with :52 to go as the Bulldogs called a timeout. The Broncos would get the ball back leading by three but would end up turning the ball back over to Concordia. CUNE would get two Noah Schutte free throws to make it 60-59 with :11 to go.
The ball eventually found the hands of Thomas as he would get fouled and would make both free throws with :06 remaining. The Broncos decided to play the odds as Schutte would get fouled so they wouldn't take a three. Schutte went to the line and made the first and missed the second as Smith went up over Thomas and got the rebound and would get fouled. He went to the line and made both free throws to tie the game 62-62 with :02 to go.
The game would end up in overtime as Thomas drained his only three of the game to get things started. Brooks Kissinger came back with a layup followed by a jumper from Sughroue to make it 67-64. Unfortunately, the Broncos still had some trouble with the 3-2 zone as CUNE eventually took the lead at 68-67.
The Broncos continued to get stops and had the ball under its own hoop with 5.7 on the clock. Thomas inbounded the ball and got it right back having a good look but his shot would go long as Concordia would escape with the 69-67 win.
Matovic led the way with 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting while pulling down six boards. Thomas finished with 13 points, eight boards and eight assists while Corrigan added 11 points. Quinn Johnson finished with nine while Sughroue added seven.
The Broncos finished the game shooting 40 percent (26-for-65) while CUNE shot 36.7 percent (22-for-60) as the rebounding edge favored the Bulldogs 45-to-39.
Hastings is now 19-8 (14-5) on the year and will try and at least get a share of the GPAC title hitting the road to take on Doane Saturday Feb. 24 with tipoff set for 3:45 pm inside the Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center.
