Seward, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team was unable to put back-to-back games together losing 69-57 to Mayville State on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos got off to a fast start with two quick Anthony Thompson 3-pointers plus a Reggie Thomas layup put HC up 8-2 early on the Comets.
But then the Broncos would begin to struggle from the floor as MSU would eventually take the lead. Hastings hung around with two Thomas free throws and another Thompson three and trailed just 18-17 with 7:12 to go in the first half.
But the lead would grow to nine a few minutes later but Thomas would make back-to-back threes to keep Hastings within striking distance and trailed by just four at the break.
Once the second half started though, Hastings would only get to within five as the shots just didn't fall for Hastings. The Broncos eventually took the 69-57 loss.
Thomas led the way with 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting while Thompson added a career high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 4-of-5 from downtown. The only other Bronco in double figures was Quinn Johnson as he finished with 12 points.
Hastings shot just 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from the floor while the Comets connected on 54 percent (27-for-50). The rebounding edge also went to MSU at 36-to-32 as Danilo Matovic led the way with 10 boards.
Hastings is now 2-1 on the year and will be back in action Tuesday Nov. 7 hitting the road to take on York with tipoff set for 7:00 pm inside the Freeman Center in York, NE.
