Men's Basketball Grinds out Win Over Doane
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men’s basketball team was able to gut out a 65-53 victory over Doane on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team was able to gut out a 65-53 victory over Doane on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The later part of the first half saw Hastings hit a cold spell and was only able to score seven points over the final 10 minutes of the half. This allowed the Tigers to erase a nine point Bronco lead to go up 29-27 at halftime.
After the teams traded baskets to start the second half, Reggie Thomas then buried a three to give the lead back to the Broncos. Doane came right back with a Sheldon Cooper bucket and then a three from Nick Saiz to go up 36-32 with 17:03 to go in the game.
Hastings came right back with a Grady Corrigan three and then took the lead right back with a put back from Danilo Matovic to go up 37-36. After Brady Timm hit a three, HC went right back inside as Tyrique McMurrin went to work getting the bucket plus the harm as he made the free throw to give HC the lead right back at 40-39 with 15:20 to go.
After the teams traded empty possessions, McMurrin kicked the ball out to the top of the key where Anthony Thompson drained the three to make it 43-39. Following a timeout by the Tigers, Thomas then attacked the rack getting the tough layup to go as HC was back up by six at 45-39 with 13:23 left to play.
After Doane got two free throws to go, Thomas would come right back draining another three as Hastings now led 48-41 with under 11:00 to play.
The Tigers would get to within five but Matovic got a layup to go and then McMurrin kicked another ball out this time to Quinn Johnson as he drained a three to give the Broncos their largest lead of the game at 55-45.
From there, Hastings was able to maintain its lead as Doane was only able to get to within seven before losing by 12.
Thomas led the way for Hastings finishing with another double-double with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting while pulling down a game high 10 rebounds. McMurrin added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting while Quinn Johnson added 11 points off the bench and Matovic also finished in double figures with 10 points.
After shooting just 40 percent in the first half, Hastings came back and shot 56.5 percent in the second half. Hastings finished the game shooting 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the floor while the Tigers shot just 41.1 percent (23-for-56). A big difference in the game was from behind the arc as Hastings was 8-of-18 while Doane was just 3-for-17.
The rebounding edge went to the Broncos 36-to-33 and points in the paint also favored Hastings at 32-to-26.
Hastings improves to 7-2 (4-0) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Dec. 2 as Northwestern comes to town with tipoff set for 3:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
