Men's Basketball Ends 2023 With a Big Win Over Bethany

The Swedes came out with some pressure defense that gave the Broncos some fits early and allowed Bethany to stick around for a good portion of the first half.
Hastings held onto a slim 27-26 lead when Reggie Thomas buried back-to-back jumpers to make it 31-26 with 6:00 to go in the first half. After the teams traded buckets, Ben Boudreau drained a three as Hastings had its largest lead up to this point at eight with 4:27 left in the first half. Then Thomas worked his way into the lane getting the layup plus the harm to make it 39-28 with 3:50 to go in the first half.
The Broncos rode that momentum into halftime with a 43-31 lead. Hastings was shooting 57 percent (16-for-28) in the first half while the Swedes shot 44.8 percent (13-for-29). Danilo Matovic led the way in the first half with 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting.
Bethany tried to hang on for a little while in the second half but then the lead began to stretch for the Broncos as Tyrique McMurrin hit a layup followed by a three from Quinn Johnson as Hastings now led 58-39 with 12:12 to go. The lead grew to as many as 25 as the Broncos would win by that amount 80-55.
Hastings was led by Matovic's double-double as he scored a game high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and also pulled down 11 boards. Thomas also finished with a double-double scoring 11 points, pulled down 11 boards and dished out six assists. Johnson had 15 points off the bench as he was 5-for-6 from behind the arc. McMurrin was the other Bronco in double figures in scoring with 14 as he was 6-fopr-9 from the floor.
Hastings finished the game shooting 54.5 percent (30-for-55) while the Swedes cooled off to just 36.4 percent (20-for-55) as Bethany was just 7-for-26 in the second half. The Broncos were hot from behind the arc hitting 52.9 percent (11-for-17) while the Swedes were just 27.3 percent (6-of-22).
Points in the paint heavily favored Hastings 32-to-16 and Hastings also out rebounded BC 40-to-24.
Hastings improves to 11-3 (6-0) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 6 as Morningside comes to town with tipoff set for 3:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
