(Hastings, NE) – On the first day of Bronco Baseball Family Weekend, Hastings lost game one to Doane, 13-9, and game two, 10-6.
After Doane got the scoring going in game one on a one-out two-run double, the Broncos came right back with four runs of their own. With two on and one out, sophomore Peighton Vargas drove in both runners. Senior Tristan Martinez singled in the next run, and following a walk to junior Jared Delgado, an infield hit by junior Levi Fletcher turned into a run from Martinez on an errant throw to put Hastings up 4-2.
Doane answered with four runs on four hits, getting their first three runs on base hits, before taking a 6-4 lead on a sac fly. The Broncos loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and Vargas cleared the bases with a three-run RBI-double on a ball that took a tricky hop in center field, as the Broncos took a 7-6 lead.
In the fourth inning after sophomore Tyler Rojas and junior Evan Morrison led off with singles, both players executed a double-steal and moved up another base on an error by the Tiger catcher, scoring Rojas. Morrison scored on a sac fly by junior Samuele Bruno to go up 9-6.
The Tigers scored two runs in the fifth, coming on a two-run home run to deep right, trimming the Bronco lead to one. Doane tied the game at nine in the sixth, as a leadoff walk scored two batters later on an RBI-single.
Hastings would be held without a run in the sixth and Doane took a 13-9 lead in the seventh, starting with a leadoff walk and RBI-double. The next run scored on a wild pitch, then a two-run home run made it a 13-9 game. Vargas doubled to begin the seventh, but the Tigers retired the next three batters to end the game.
Vargas led Hastings offensively in game one, going 3-5 with a double and five RBIs. Rojas was 3-4 with three runs scored and Morrison was 2-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Junior Levi Fletcher also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4 at the plate.
Doane led off game two with a home run on the second pitch of the game and tacked on a run later in the inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers scored twice more in the second, going up 4-0.
With runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the second, junior Joshren Mace Magnaye, who was 2-4 with a walk and RBIs, drove in Martinez. The Broncos had the bases loaded later in the inning with two outs, but Doane got out of the inning with a strikeout, keeping it at 4-1. A one out RBI-double by the Tigers in the fourth made it 5-1.
Hastings answered back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of their own, all with two outs. With a runner on first and two out, Fletcher was hit by a pitch and freshman Jake Sweet blooped a double into shallow right field to score senior Ben Richter. Rojas then laced a single up the middle to bring Fletcher and Sweet home, cutting the deficit to one at 5-4.
In the fifth inning, Martinez singled, then with two outs, Mace Magnaye knocked a single in the left field and the ball took a tricky hop in the outfield grass, allowing Martinez to come around and score to tie the game at five.
Doane retook the lead at 6-5 in the seventh on a two-out single, but Hastings tied it up at six in the bottom of the seventh, as Bruno was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and later scored on an RBI-groundout from sophomore Cody Haynes.
After Hastings turned a double play to get the first two outs in the eighth, the next five batters reached base safely, scoring four runs to take a 10-6 lead, which held to be the final score.
Up next, Hastings will host Doane tomorrow at 12 and 2:30pm to wrap up Bronco Baseball Family Weekend.
