Baseball Beats Mission 16-2 in Game One, Lose 4-1 in Game 2
(Neosho, MO) – On day two in a four-game series against Mission, Hastings’ offense erupted for 16 runs in a 16-2 victory in game one on Monday, then lost 4-1 in the series finale.

After the first out of the first inning, the next three batters reached for Hastings on a single and two walks, then junior Joshren Mace Magnaye scored junior Evan Morrison on a sac fly. Junior Dylan Wimbs delivered the big hit in the inning, a two-run RBI double to left to put Hastings up 3-0.
Mission hit a two-run home run two batters in, but senior pitcher Markus Miller would hold it down from there, throwing six scoreless innings after that with only three other hits. With two on and two out in the second, junior Samuele Bruno drove in senior Jace Valdez to take a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth inning, Valdez got on by error and two batters later, sophomore Peighton Vargas homered to left. Hastings loaded the bases on the next three at-bats. A balk by Mission scored Bruno and Mace Magnaye came home on an RBI single from freshman Diego Martinez. A sac bunt by sophomore Cody Haynes scored Wimbs for the final run of the inning, going up 9-2.
Bruno got another RBI in the fifth coming on a bases-loaded groundout. With the bases loaded, D. Martinez and Haynes had back-to-back walks. Mace Magnaye scored next on a passed ball and Valdez drove in two runs on a single to center. Hastings scored one more time on a bases-loaded walk, as Vargas got credited with the RBI to take a 16-2 lead, which held to be the final score.
Valdez went 3-5 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs. Morrison finished 2-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Vargas recorded three walks on the day, going 1-2 with three RBIs. Miller pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out six. Junior Ty Phipps pitched a scoreless seventh inning to end game one.
In game two, Mission used a one-out walk and wild pitch to get in scoring position during the first inning, then came around to score on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead. The Patriots scored three in the second inning, coming on a bases-loaded and a two-run RBI single to go up 4-0.
Haynes drew a leadoff walk to start the third and after stealing second and third on separate attempts, he scored on a ground ball to first, cutting the lead to 4-1.
In the fifth inning, Hastings loaded the bases with one out, but Mission forced an inning-ending double play to get out without giving up a run. Hastings had a baserunner in each of the last two innings, but were unable to drive them in, ending the game in a 4-1 loss.
Senior pitcher Brody Severin came in with two outs in the second of game two and threw 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out five. Freshman Cameron Dahlgren also pitched a scoreless inning in the sixth.
Up next, Hastings will host Mayville State in Lincoln, NE for a four-game series, beginning with a 12pm double-header on Friday, Feb. 20.
