Placke, Williams, Meyer Push Volleyball Past Mount Marty
Yankton, S.D.- In a rematch against Mount Marty on Saturday, the Hastings College volleyball team repeated what they did in their September matchup; swept the Lancers in straight sets 25-19, 25-17, 25-12.
The Broncos (18-1,10-1 GPAC) jumped to a quick 5-1 set one lead over the Lancers (8-13,1-10 GPAC) when Andrea LaVene (SR/Roca, NE) and Casey Krolikowski (JR/Cairo, NE) tallied four kills paired with a Lancers attack error. This lead was all the Broncos needed to quickly propel themselves to a a 25-19 win and leading by as much as 8 points in the set.
Hastings continued their set one momentum into the set two, taking a strong 4-0 lead from kills by Cassidy Ostrand (SO/Central City, NE) and Catherine Williams (SR/Aurora, CO) and another Lancers attack error. The Broncos used a .655 hitting percentage to take a strong lead in the set that ended with a 5-1 run off Katie Placke (SR/Grand Island, NE), LaVene, and Williams kills and a Lancers bad set for set point.
Set three followed suit with set one and two, as the Broncos did not let off the gas pedal. Hastings used three different 4-0 runs to take set three and the match from the Lancers.
Placke, Williams, Sage Meyer (JR/Bellevue, NE), Krolikowski, and Ostrand all had six or more kills in the match. Amongst the slew of kills, Placke also tallied 31 assists and seven digs. Clare Hamburger (JR/Hastings, NE) added 14 assists with seven digs. Jill Bax (SR/Lincoln, NE) led the Broncos defensively with nine digs.
As a team, Hastings had a .489 hitting compared to the .121 hitting percentage recorded by Mount Marty.
For the Broncos, their final five matches are all against teams that are ranked as of Saturday, with their next match being at home on Friday against Morningside. The match against the Mustangs (16-8,8-3 GPAC) is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
