Bronco Volleyball stays undefeated following Bill Marshall Classic
The Hastings College Women's Volleyball team remained undefeated Saturday at the 2nd annual Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic in Grand Island, NE. The No. 1 ranked Broncos swept familiar foe No. 8 Columbia College (25-18, 27-25, 25-23) and (RV) College of Coastal Carolina (25-18, 25-15, 25-19) to finish day two of the tournament.
Katie Placke (SR/Grand Island, NE) led the way for the Broncos tallying 17 kills in match one while hitting .484, and 13 kills in match two while hitting .667. The Broncos' offense as a whole hit .220 and then .338. However, it wasn't offense that head coach Matt Buttermore was concerned about this weekend.
"We need to be a little more consistent on defense," Buttermore said. "I thought we played better defense this weekend than we did last weekend, but we can still be better. . .We can be a better blocking team. I think blocking is something we've got to work on.
Buttermore also thought his team's serving and passing was a positive. Rielyn Hoffman (JR/Chandler, AZ) led the Broncos with 2 aces in game one and 5 in game two.
"I was happy with our serve and pass game," Buttermore said. "We played in a shorter gym last week than this, so we had bigger serves this week and I thought we held up well."
With a younger group this year, but nonetheless an experienced one, Buttermore continues to reiterate he had no expectations. It is a different year and a different team.
"I had no idea what to expect," Buttermore said. "We had a lot of changes, some question marks with injuries and stuff, so yeah, we are happy to be 7-0."
The Broncos will be back in action in Hastings on Friday, September 1 at 6 p.m. as they take on (RV) Ottawa University.
