Volleyball Extinguishes Flames in Omaha
Omaha- After a strong rebound win against Midland, the Hastings College volleyball team took no time to continue their momentum when they swept the College of St. Mary Flames in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-15) in Omaha on Saturday.
Set one went back-and-forth between the Broncos (16-1,8-1 GPAC) and the Flames (8-10,1-7 GPAC) until Hastings pulled away from CSM early in the set off kills by Katie Placke (SR/Grand Island, NE), Casey Krolikowski (JR/Cairo, NE), Andrea LaVene (SR/Roca, NE), Lucy Skoch (FR/Hastings, NE), Cassidy Ostrand (SO/Central City, NE), and a Emily Filsinger (SR/Clearwater, NE) service ace for a 25-16 set one win.
Hastings and CSM had another battle in the beginning of set two, but an 11-5 run late in the set by the Broncos got them within a point of a set two win before a CSM service error sealed the set for the Broncos.
After the intermission, the Broncos came out strong, taking the first three rallies. Another battle ensued, but the Flames could not handle the Broncos strong offensive push to a 25-15 set three and match win.
Ostrand led the Broncos with 11 kills and five block assists. Placke tallied a team-leading 20 assists along with eight kills. Clare Hamburger (JR/Hastings, NE) also tallied 16 assists. Jill Bax (SR/Lincoln, NE) added to the mix defensively with 11 digs.
The Broncos continue their title-defending season when Concordia comes to town on Wednesday for Pink Night. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
