Brackhan Wins 3000m Race Walk at GPAC Championships
(Mitchell, SD) – The women’s indoor track and field team competed at the GPAC Championships on Friday and Saturday hosted by Dakota Wesleyan, taking ninth out of 11 teams.

The Broncos performed well in the 3000m race walk by taking the top three spots, as junior Ava Brackhan took first in the event with another B-Standard time of 17:42.14. Freshman Destini Johnson was right behind in second with a time of 18:49.71 and senior Shania Santos was third with a time of 20:11.75.
Sophomore Jaida Rowe qualified for the 60m hurdle finals by taking fifth (9.11) in the prelims. In the finals of the 60m hurdles, she took fourth, crossing the finish line at the 8.97 mark, just .03 seconds behind third-place Doane. Rowe later took fourth in the 400m with a time of 58.77, less than a second behind first-place Northwestern.
Senior Zailee Poulson took fifth in the high jump final by clearing 5'03"00. In the 4x800m relay, Hastings took seventh (10:39.96) with a group of senior Cecilia Velarde, Santos, sophomore Whitney Cure, and senior Cynthia Chaparro-Belloc.
The Broncos also took seventh in the 4x400m relay (4:13.82), made up of sophomore Lucy Carey, Rowe, senior Cecilia Velarde, and freshman Kamerin Turner.
Carey and Poulson both took part in the heptathlon, finishing ninth and 11th, respectively. Carey's best finish came in the 60m hurdles, where she took fifth (9.60). Poulson's best event was the high jump where she placed second (5'03.00").
Senior Cecilia Velarde was 11th in the 600m run with a time of 1:44.74. In the 1000m, senior Cynthia Chaparro-Belloc clocked in with a time of 3:20.78 to take 12th.
Junior Trinity Doublin finished in 17th place in the triple jump (32'07.75"). In the throwing events, junior Kylee Hasselmann competed in the weight throw, finishing 13th with a top throw of 47'06.50".
Up next, Hastings will have several athletes compete at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The athletes that have qualified to compete there are Poulson (high jump), Brackhan (3000m race walk), Santos (3000m race walk), and Rowe (400m and 60m hurdles).
