Six Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Defeats Midland
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women’s basketball team got back in the win column Wednesday night by defeating Midland 77-67 inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team got back in the win column Wednesday night by defeating Midland 77-67 inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Warriors kept it close as Hastings held a slim 30-27 lead when Carley Lenners found a wide open Katharine Hamburger at the top of the key for the three to make it a six point game. The lead jumped to eight on a Dawson Knode layup as the Lady Broncos took that into halftime.
After Midland got a three from Lexi Kraft to make it 37-32 to start the third, Kiernan Paulk came right back with a layup. Midland would get the game back to six but Mariyah Avila buried a three to make it 43-34 with 5:57 to go in the third. Hamburger then found Avila for an easy layup as the lead jumped to 11 at 45-34. At this point, the Warriors were struggling to find a bucket while Hastings continued to extend the lead when Avila hit another three to make it 48-34 with 4:46 to go in the third. Leners then put HC up 50-34 with a driving layup.
The lead eventually got to 19 but Midland would not go quietly as they picked up full court managing to keep things interesting closing the gap to as low as seven. The Warriors went on a 15-5 run and trailed 70-63 with 1:30 to go but Midland would get no closer as Hastings would end its three game skid with the 77-67 victory.
Six Lady Broncos all finished in double figures which is the most for the season as Hamburger led the way with 13 points while Avila finished with 12 points. Miriam Miller and Sarah Treffer each had 11 with Leners and Knode each finishing with 10. Leners led the way with eight rebounds while Hamburger pulled down six.
Hastings finished the game shooting 41.5 percent (22-for-53) while Midland shot just 36.5 percent (19-for-52. There was a combined 56 free throws in the game as Hastings went 25-for-31 and Midland went 21-for-25. The Lady Broncos won the rebounding battle 37-to-30.
Hastings improves to 10-17 (6-15) on the year and will be back in action one last time Saturday Feb. 18 as Northwestern comes to town with tipoff set for 2:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
