There are a lot of new faces for the Lady Broncos this season that will see lots of playing time with Riley Clavel out for the season. One of those to keep an eye on is true freshman Mariyah Avila as she scored the first points of the game on a layup and after the Aggies took a brief 4-2 lead, Avila drained her first collegiate three to make it 5-4.
Another player that hasn't played in a basketball game in two years was Olivia Kugler as she drained her first collegiate jumper to make it 7-4 with 6:47 to play in the first quarter.
The Lady Broncos and Aggies went back and forth until late in the first quarter when Kugler drained a three followed by a Katharine Hamburger three to make it 19-13 after one quarter of play.
The teams would basically trade baskets until Hastings was leading 30-23 when another true freshman in Sarah Treffer stepped up and buried her first collegiate three to make it 33-23 with 5:52 to go in the first half. As the first half began to wind down Hastings increased its lead with free throws taking a 43-31 lead into halftime.
The Broncos were able to maintain a double digit lead and it grew to as much as 15 before OPSU made one last run to try and get back in the game in the fourth. India Gultry would make a layup and then following a steal, Jamiya Eaddy made a layup and the lead was down to six at 54-48 with 8:43 to play as HC called a timeout.
The Lady Broncos then dialed up a play for Carley Lenners as she got the layup to go slowing the Aggie momentum. After the teams traded layups, Avila drained another big three to increase the lead back to 11 with 7:00 to play as she later made back-to-back layups to push the lead back to 15 at 67-52 with 5:18 to go. Hastings grew the lead to 17 at one point and then took the win 73-63.
Avila led the way for Hastings with a career high 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Hamburger added a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. This was her second career double-double. Kiernan Paulk added 10 points and pulled down seven boards. Kuglar added nine points, Treffer finished with eight and Leners added seven points.
The Lady Broncos finished the night shooting 44.8 percent (25-for-58) and 71.4 percent (15-for-21) from the line.
OPSU shot 36.5 percent (23-for-63) but shot just 16.7 percent (3-for-18) from downtown. Hastings dominated the boards 48-to-28.
Hastings is now 1-0 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Nov. 5 finishing up the Hastings C3 Classic against Ottawa with tipoff set for 3:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
