Jamestown, ND – The Hastings College women's basketball team had to fend off a late flurry of shots but came away with the 63-62 victory over Jamestown on Friday night.
It got quite a bit interesting for the Lady Broncos towards the end after Olivia Kugler made a tough runner in the lane to make it 63-58 with1:58 left to play. Jamestown countered with a layup from Hannah Demars to make it a three point game. Alyssa Baker then broke free down the lane but couldn't get her layup to go as the Jimmies came right back with a jumper from Kate Cordes to make it 63-32 with :54 to go.
The teams then traded possessions as HC missed a shot while Jamestown turned the ball over. Eventually Carley Leners would get sent to the line where she missed both free throws keeping the door open for the Jimmies. Demars would then get the ball under the hoop and would miss two shots as she would get tied up with 1.9 seconds left on the clock. Possession stayed with the Jimmies where Demars got another look but her shot missed the mark as Hastings would escape with the one point victory.
The Lady Broncos led most of the game but it was in the third quarter where Jamestown would create some breathing room going up 50-44. Katharine then drained one of her four threes on the night to make it 50-47 and after Audrey Rodakowski hit a jumper for Jamestown, Mariyah Avila took a three at the buzzer that bounced off the front of the rim, into the air and through the hoop to make it 52-50 heading to the final period.
With the game tied 54-54, Baker would get a layup to fall followed by a jumper from Kiernan Paulk to give HC the 58-54 advantage. After Jamestown scored, Hamburger hit another three to put Hastings up 61-56 before the crazy ending played out.
Hamburger led the way with 12 points as all of them came from downtown as she was 4-for-8. Allison Bauer also finished in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Dawson Knode finished with seven points and seven boards while Avila, Kugler and Paulk each finished with seven points. Leners added eight points and six boards. Baker finished her night with five points.
Hastings finished the game shooting 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor but was 50 percent (9-for-18) from behind the arc. Jamestown shot 36.9 percent (24-for-65) but was just 22.2 percent (6-for-27) from downtown. Hastings also held the advantage on the boards 42-to-40.
Hastings improves to 44 (2-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Dec. 3 hitting the road again to take on NAIA No. 13 Dakota Wesleyan with tipoff set for 1:00 pm in Mitchell, SD.
