Sioux Center, IA – The Hastings College women's basketball team knew it would have its hands full against NAIA No. 5 Dordt as the Defenders won the game 79-59 on Friday night.
After Dordt jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, HC would finally get on the board when Mariyah Avila connected on a three from the wing to make it 6-3. Dordt countered with a Faith Van Holland layup but the Miriam Miller came in off the bench and lit a bit of a spark beating her defender to the basket for the layup. She then hit two free throws to make it 8-7 followed by a tough turn around jumper from Carley Leners to give the Lady Broncos its first and only lead at 9-8.
Once the game was tied 10-10, the Defenders would close out the first quarter on a 12-4 run to lead 22-14 through one quarter of play. From there the lead would climb into the double digits as Hastings was only able to get the deficit down to 11 once in the third but that would be as close as they would get before falling by 20.
Avila led the way for Hastings scoring 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting and going 2-for-4 from downtown. Kiernan Paulk finished with eight points as six of those came from the charity stripe. Miller and Alyssa Baker each finished with seven points while Leners added six.
The Lady Broncos shot just 36 percent (18-for-50) from the floor compared to 47 percent (31-for-66) for Dordt. HC finished the game shooting 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from downtown while the Defenders shot 34.8 percent (8-for-23). Dordt won the rebounding battle 37-to-33 while neither team turned the ball over much as they combined for just 19 turnovers.
