Yankton, SD – The Hastings College women's basketball team lost on the road against Mount Marty 54-50 on Saturday afternoon inside Cimpl Arena.
It seemed like every time Hastings would make a run and maybe tie and or take the lead on Saturday, the Lancers found an answer to fend off the Lady Broncos. Hastings trailed almost the entire game minus the 2-0 lead to start the contest.
In the fourth quarter trailing 48-40, Hastings made one last run at MMU as Dawson Knode connected from the low block to make it a six point contest. Then Kiernan Paulk hit a layup to make it 48-44 with 5:20 to go. After forcing a Lancer turnover as Mariyah Avila stole the rock from Briona Jensen, she went coast to coast for the layup to make it 48-46 with 4:04 left to play.
Hastings would have its first opportunity to tie or take the lead but would end up turning the ball over. Then Avila missed a jumper followed by another turnover. But MMU was unable to get anything going on offense but the same was said for HC as Allison Bauer missed a three with 1:58 to go. Hastings finally fouled Kaela Martinez as she went to the line and made both free throws with 1:46 left to play. Hastings would get another opportunity to close the gap but Katharine Hamburger would miss her three and the Lancers would make their free throws down the stretch to pull off the 54-50 victory.
Bauer led the way with 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting as she was the only Lady Bronco to finish in double figures. Avila finished with nine points while Hamburger added seven points.
For the game Hastings shot just 32.2 percent (19-for-59) while Mount Marty shot a little better at 36 percent (18-for-50). The main difference in the game was at the charity stripe where the Lancer made 13-for-15 while Hastings was 5-for-8. The rebounding edge went to the Lady Broncos at 38-to-29 while HC committed 18 turnovers and MMU committed 15.
Hastings is now 9-15 (5-13) on the year and will be back in action Friday Feb. 10 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with tipoff set for 6:00 pm in Sioux City, IA.
