This game felt like a classic Morningside/Hastings match up once the second half started after a tough first half for both teams. But things began to heat up into the fourth quarter as Hastings just wouldn't let the Mustangs pull away.
The Lady Broncos trailed by four early in the fourth quarter but erased that deficit beginning with a Kiernan Paulk and one to make it 50-49. Katharine Hamburger then picked up a steal and made a layup to give Hastings its first lead since it was 2-0. Follow a few empty possessions for both teams, Paulk broke free for another layup as the run was now up to 7-0 before a McKenna Sims layup ended the run.
After Allison Bauer hit a three with 3:23 to go in regulation but Morningside countered with a 6-0 run to lead by two with 1:37 left to go. The score would remain the same as the Mustangs would miss four straight free throws to give life to Hastings and they would take advantage. Jina Douglas called a timeout with :17 to go and the play led to Miriam Miller finding a wide open Paulk at the low block to get the layup to go with just :03 to go tying the game 60-60. Morningside had one more shot after advancing the ball with the timeout but couldn't get anything going as the game headed to overtime.
Things did look a bit bleak as Morningside had a three point lead when Paulk would go to the line with :11 to go. She made the first and then missed the second as Miller was able to pull down the long offensive board and got the ball to Bauer but her shot missed. Dawson Knode ripped down the board and got the short jumper to go as time expired sending the game to double overtime.
Then the Mustangs caught fire shooting 56 percent including 60 percent from downtown as Morningside was able to pull away for the 87-79 victory.
For the game, Hastings shot 37.3 percent (28-for-75) while Morningside shot 37 percent (30-for-81). The Mustangs were shooting just 24.2 percent (8-for-33) from behind the arc before the second overtime explosion. Rebounds went to the Mustangs by a 52-50 edge while both teams turned the ball over 21 times.
The Lady Broncos were led by Bauer finished with 18 points while going 5-for-10 from behind the arc. Paulk finished the night with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Mariyah Avila and Knode also finished in double figures with 11 points. Hamburger added eight points while Miller finished with six points and a career high 12 rebounds.
Hastings falls to 8-9 (4-7) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 14 hitting the road to take on College of Saint Mary with tipoff set for 2:00 pm in Omaha, NE.
