Northwestern Completes Sweep of Broncos
(Orange City, IA) – The Hastings Broncos took on (RV) Northwestern in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, losing 6-4 in game one and 10-7 in game two.
(Orange City, IA) – The Hastings Broncos took on (RV) Northwestern in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, losing 6-4 in game one and 10-7 in game two.
Northwestern got momentum early by overcoming a couple of error in the top of the first, as the Broncos had runners at the corners and one out, but were unable to score. The Red Raiders went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on an RBI-bunt single.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the second on a pair of unearned runs. They went up 5-0 in the third, getting all of their baserunners on with two outs and scoring on a two-run RBI-single. Northwestern added to their lead with a solo home run to go up 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Broncos got back into the game in the sixth with seniors Lexie Mudloff and Lauren Lee hitting singles to start the inning. A sac fly by junior Kaylee Pinneo drove in Mudloff, then with two outs, freshman Raygan Hoos' single to short brought home Lee. Pinch-running freshman Maylei Washburn scored from third on a wild pitch and sophomore Graecy Graf made it 6-4 on a base hit to right field. The Red Raiders ended the inning with a flyout.
Lee, who was 3-4 with a run scored, got a two-out single in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but a groundout ended game one at 6-4. Freshman Jazlyn Moreno pitched all six innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits, striking out two.
In game two with one out in the second, senior Ana Medeiros walked and Skinner singled. Hoos and Graf drew walks as well, scoring Medeiros to take a 1-0 lead. After a pitching change, senior Katyn Kappler delivered a two-run RBI-single. On a ball hit to third by sophomore Sofia Carroll, the Red Raiders committed an error, as Graf scored on the play. Mudloff drove in another run on a single to right, making it 5-0.
Hastings took a 6-0 lead in the third on an RBI-single to score senior Sam Skinner. Northwestern turned things around in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on four hits, tying the game at six.
Northwestern had two of the first three batters reach in the sixth. They took a two-run lead on a bunt and Bronco error to score two runs, then hit a two-run home run to go up 10-6. Medeiros doubled and Skinner hit an infield single to leadoff the seventh. Hoos grounded into a double play to score a run, but the game ended on a strikeout in the next at-bat, ending the game at 10-7.
Kappler was 3-4 in game two with three RBIs and a run scored, while Skinner was 2-4 with two runs scored.
Up next, Hastings will play at College of Saint Mary on Wednesday, Apr. 22 at 3 and 5pm.
