Men's Wrestling Goes 3-0 in Loosbrock Duals, Pick Up Wins in Service Salute
(Atchison, KS) – Men’s wrestling had a busy Friday and Saturday in Atchison, KS, filled with wrestling at the Loosbrock Duals on Friday, as well as the Service Salute on Saturday. Hastings did well in the Friday duals, going a perfect 3-0.

At the Loosbrock Duals on Friday, Hastings defeated Colby Community College 33-23. Freshman Aidan Rodriguez started things off at 125 with a pin. Colby won the next three classes with two pins and a tech fall to go up 17-6, but the Broncos ended up winning five of the next six weight classes to get the win. Junior Nicholas Freeland at 157 got a 15-0 tech fall, senior Israel Manriquez at 165 earned four points for a 16-5 major decision, then pins from sophomore Esteban Sedano at 174, senior Matheson Rodriguez at 197, and sophomore Koen Mattern at 285 clinched the win at 33-23.
Against Barton Community College, A. Rodriguez at 125 pinned his opponent in 21 seconds. Barton won the 133 bout by pin, then senior Dalton Michael earned a 12-6 decision at 141. After Hastings forfeited the 149 bout, they won the next three matches by fall, as Freeland (157), Manriquez (165), and Sedano (174) pinned the Cougars to make it 27-12. Barton took the next two matches with pins to get within three at 27-24, but Mattern (285) secured a pin at the 2:04 mark to conclude the 33-24 win.
In their battle against Labette CC, A. Rodriguez again needed less than a minute to take down his opponent and freshman Carter Horner received three points for his 23-20 decision win at 133. Labette claimed six points at 141 and 149 to go up 12-9, then Tobias won at 157 by forfeit. Freeland won a close 5-3 decision at 165 and Sedano got a 13-2 major decision victory at 174. After the Cardinals won at 184 by fall, M. Rodriguez (197) and Mattern (285) finished their bouts by pinning their opponents, as Mattern needed only 12 seconds to seal the 34-18 team victory.
On Saturday in the Service Salute, Hastings had a couple of wrestlers win matches. Sophomore Aiden Griffin won his first match at 197 against Central Methodist on a sudden victory with a takedown at the 1:14 mark in overtime. He was up 11-6 after one period, then after getting behind 12-11 in the second, he forced overtime with an escape in the third. He lost his next match to Rodney Trotter of Avila, then defeated Avila's Noah Crossman on a 7-3 decision, getting a late takedown to advance to the fifth place match. Griffin would lose by fall to Midland to take sixth.
Junior Creel Weber began his day with a 7-3 decision loss to Midland at 125, but pinned his way from there to the consolation title. His longest consolation match came in his first bout against Barton CC, winning by fall at the 4:02 mark. In the consolation semifinals, he dropped Colby CC 42 seconds into the bout to earn a spot in the consolation final. In that last match, he wrestled Warren Taylor of Central Methodist, who he pinned at the 2:41 mark of the first period.
