#8 Bellevue Rallies to Defeat Hastings
(Bellevue, Nebraska) – In the 2024 regular season opener the Hastings Broncos fell 2-1 to the #8-ranked Bellevue University Bruins, as first-year head coach Brad Green fell just short of a signature opening win to his Bronco career.

The first half did not register any scoring, but did not lack physical play. There were a total of 17 fouls, seven yellow cards and one red card in the first 45 minutes.
Hastings led in total shots 3-2 in the first half, though neither team registered a shot on goal. Each team also had one corner kick. Junior defender David Maqueda had two of the Bronco shot attempts, with senior midfielder Lewis Bowes taking the other.
The second half featured more offense as both teams had opportunities early in the half. The Broncos scored less than one minute into the second half as Maqueda found sophomore forward Ayo Makinde on a cross from the right side to give Hastings a 1-0 lead.
Bellevue had a big opportunity in the 54th minute as they had a couple of corner kicks and shot attempts, including one on goal that was blocked by senior goalkeeper Pablo Arce-Salinas. The Bruins also saved a shot on goal that was taken by senior midfielder Lewis Albert.
Shortly after that Bruin save, Bellevue came the other way and evened up the score at one on a goal in the 58th minute. In the 72nd minute, the Broncos were called for a handball violation in the box that resulted in a penalty kick, which the Bruins converted to go ahead 2-1.
Hastings almost responded a matter of seconds later, but freshman midfielder Moises Trochez had his header snared by the Bellevue goalkeeper.
The Broncos would get just one more shot attempt the rest of the way as Bellevue held on to win 2-1. For the match, both teams had seven shot attempts and 3 shots on goal. Bellevue was able to capitalize offensively in the second half with six corner kick attempts compared to just two for Hastings.
Hastings will next host Graceland on Saturday, Aug. 24 for their 2024 home debut. The match will take place at 8pm at Lloyd Wilson Field.
