Women's Tennis Ends Season With Semifinal Loss to Top-Seeded Mustangs
(South Sioux City, NE) – Shortly after their thrilling quarterfinal win over Northwestern, Hastings faced a tough test in the top-seeded Morningside Mustangs in the semifinals, who defeated the Broncos 4-0 Friday afternoon.
(South Sioux City, NE) – Shortly after their thrilling quarterfinal win over Northwestern, Hastings faced a tough test in the top-seeded Morningside Mustangs in the semifinals, who defeated the Broncos 4-0 Friday afternoon.
The doubles matches had great moments for the Broncos, but Morningside was able to win 6-1 at #2 and #3 doubles to go up 1-0. The #1 doubles team of sophomores Josline Carter and Victoria Harris trailed 5-2 when the doubles point was decided.
In singles, Morningside won at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and at #5 singles, 6-1, 6-1 to go up 3-0. Carter held close in a 6-3 first set loss at #1 singles, but fell 6-1 in set two, as the Mustangs clinched the match at 4-0.
Harris had the most success for the Broncos in singles, leading 5-4 in the first set at #2 singles before the Mustangs came back to win the opening set, 7-5, which ended being the last completed games of that match. Freshmen Cara Ansbach and sophomore Abby Harveson each managed to win three game in their first sets at #4 and #6 singles, respectively. Both were down a break in the second set when the match was clinched.
The loss ends the season for the Broncos, but the future of the team is bright with their first conference tournament win since 2019 and all players havIng at least one more year of eligibility remaining.
