(Sioux City, IA) – With Hastings coming into the game with an undefeated 3-0 record, the Briar Cliff Chargers knocked off the Broncos 80-67 on Saturday. The Chargers outscored Hastings 26-11 in the second quarter to key their win.
The first quarter belonged to the Broncos, as after Briar Cliff scored the first four points, Hastings responded with a 7-0 run with two baskets from junior Mariyah Avila and a three from sophomore Tathis Arredondo.
With the game tied up at seven, freshman McKenna Yates's three-pointer, then junior Macy Bryant scored the next 10 points for the Broncos in the span of two minutes to lead to a 22-14 lead after one quarter.
Briar Cliff scored on their first three possessions, then tied the game up at 22 less than two minutes into the quarter. With Hastings leading 24-22, the Chargers went on a 12-0 run to go up 10. They continued to keep the momentum the rest of the quarter, though freshman Ann Bose's bucket right before halftime cut the lead to 40-33.
Bryant started the second half with a three-pointer off a pass from Avila. Following a Charger basket, Avila absorbed the contact and converted on a three-point play to bring the Broncos within four. That would be as close as they would get as Briar Cliff responded with a 7-0 run, which would lead 62-52 going into the fourth quarter.
Looking to make a fourth quarter rally, Hastings briefly cut the lead to five on a Bose three, but the Chargers responded with a three-pointer of their own on the next possession with seven minutes remaining. Another Charger three with 4:45 left put Briar Cliff in firm control, as they rolled to the finish line, 80-67.
Bryant led the Broncos with 17 points and five rebounds. Avila had 14 points and four rebounds, while Yates contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
