(Hastings, NE) – The Broncos showed little to no rust in their return to the court from Thanksgiving break, turning a eight-point halftime lead into a 28-point blowout in their 87-59 win over Bethany.
Hastings scored the first six points of the game with free throws by senior Kiernan Paulk sandwiched in between baskets from freshman McKenna Yates and sophomore Rachel Goodon. Bethany responded with a 10-2 run to go up two with 4:47 left in the quarter, but with the game tied at 12, freshman Ann Bose came off the bench to drill two threes in the final 75 seconds of the period, putting the Broncos ahead 18-16 at the end of one.
Bose stayed red-hot in the second quarter, nailing a three on their first possession following a steal by Goodon. Paulk responded to a Swede bucket on their next play, then after Bethany took a brief 25-24 lead, Bose hit her fourth three-pointer of the half.
Goodon would score the next five points, as the stifling Bronco defense held the Swedes without a point for almost six minutes. Paulk and Goodon each hit a pair of free throws with under two minutes left at halftime, then on their last possession of the half, Paulk knocked two more down from the stripe, as Hastings held a 38-30 halftime lead.
Off of a steal, Bethany opened the second half with a three. Sophomore Tathis Arredondo scored next for the Broncos, then after a block from freshman Jentri Marx, Arredondo hit a three to put the lead back to eight. Marx got a couple of baskets shortly after to make it a double-digit lead. Following a Swede three, Arredondo responded again with a bucket. A steal and basket at the other end from Marx, assisted by Arredondo, pulled them ahead by 11 with 3:45 left in the third quarter.
In the last 2:16 with Hastings leading by 12, Yates got fouled and made two free throws. After an empty Swede possession, freshman Mikah O'Neill scored a layup off the bench. A missed three by the Swedes was collected by O'Neill and Bose turned that into a transition three, giving Hastings 61-42 lead. Following the Swedes' timeout, Bethany hit a three and Yates hit two free throws, as Hastings led 63-45 after three.
Bose hit her sixth three of the game to open the fourth and Hastings turned a steal by freshman Adyson Mlnarik into a basket for Goodon. Minutes later Mlnarik got on the scoreboard with a three. Up 24, Yates scored and Bose hit her seventh three, pouring on to their lead. Arredondo scored the final eight points for the Broncos, including an and-one on their final possession, as Hastings took the game 87-59.
Hastings held a 13-rebound edge on the Swedes and turned them over 22 times by recording 15 steals. The Broncos knocked down 11 threes on 44 percent shooting, including seven by Bose, who scored a team-high 21 points off the bench, all from three. She also had six rebounds and a team-high four steals. Arredondo had 15 points, while Goodon had 14 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Paulk finished with 12 points off of seven free throws to go along with five rebounds. Marx chipped in with 10 points and three steals, while senior Mariyah Avila led the team in assists with six to go along with her two points.
