Aholelei Leads Men's Wrestling at Hastings Open
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men’s wrestling team was in action Saturday as the Broncos hosted the Hastings Open inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men's wrestling team was in action Saturday as the Broncos hosted the Hastings Open inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
At 141, Kavika Aholelei won his first match of the day in a hard fought 4-3 win over Dante Venema of Dickinson State. He then lost to Eron Haynes 17-2 moving him into the consolation bracket. There he made quick work of Coby Schreiner of Newman by pinning him at the :49 mark and then he defeated teammate Andy Rojas 8-2 to move into the consolation semifinals where he faced off against Jordan Kelber of Nebraska-Kearney. This match up didn't last long as Aholelei did a quick pick of Kelber's hand and then Aholelei had Kebler on his back pinning him at just :20 into the match. Aholelei would then settle for fourth place after losing the third place match 10-3 to Joseph Rice of Missouri Valley. Rojas began his day with a very hard fought 8-7 win over Jonny Burnette of Northwestern but moved to the consolation bracket after losing 16-0 to Daniel DeRosier of UNK. There he pinned Khyler Carstarphen of Grand View at the 1:35 mark before having his day come to and end to Aholelei.
At 285, Both Henry Jones and Matheson Rodriquez would lose their opening matches of the day but Jones bounced back to pin Dontavious Daniel of Northwest Kansas while Rodriquez defeated Fernando Salazar 4-2 to stay alive. Jones then dominated Jayden Joseph 21-6 who was wrestling unattached but then had his day end in the quarters of the consolation bracket by falling to Jake Boley of UNK. Rodriquez lost his next match to Jaden Davis of Grand View as his day came to a close.
At 133, Christian Mizzell would go 1-2 on the day picking up a win to begin his day by defeating Konner Alejandro who was wrestling unattached by beating him 10-6. He went on to lose his next two matches.
At 165, Cole Maschmann would go 1-2 on the day as his win came against Bryan Piscitello of Grand View in the consolation bracket before having his day come to a close. He did beat Piscitello 7-1.
The Broncos will turn its attention to Oklahoma Wesleyan as Hastings hits the road for the dual on Tuesday Jan. 10 set to begin at 7:00 pm in Bartelsville, OK.
