Men's Soccer Match Ends in a Draw at Graceland

(Lamoni, IA) – The men's soccer team traveled to take on the Graceland Yellowjackets on Saturday, with the Broncos coming away with a 2-2 draw.
Graceland wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in the first minute of the game. Hastings got on the board in the 40th minute on a pass from senior Juan Lopez-Arteaga that appeared to deflect off of a Yellowjacket for an own goal, with the goal given to sophomore Tim Berger, who forced the deflection with his hustle.
The Yellowjackets took six shots in the first half to Hastings' five, and had a 3-2 advantage on shots on goal. Seniors David Hoti and Wade McWhorter each took two shots in the first half, with Hoti registering the other shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ethan Watkins responded to the early goal by saving two shots later in the half.
Hastings took a 2-1 lead at the 57:18 mark in the second half on a pass from Berger to junior Jake Watt for the go-ahead goal. Graceland answered back in the 72nd minute on a play that Watkins saved the first shot, but was unable to secure it, allowing the Yellowjackets a second chance to score, tying it up at two.
Berger and Hoti each had shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of the game and Watkins also had two saves for Hastings, ending the game with a 2-2 draw, despite the Yellowjackets outshooting the Broncos 11-4 overall and 6-3 on shots on goal. Hoti led the team with three shots, two of them on goal, while Berger and McWhorter each took two shots. Watkins finished the match with seven saves.
Up next, Hastings will travel to Winfield, KS on Wednesday, Sept. 3 to take on Southwestern at 4pm.
