(Hastings, NE) – The Briar Cliff Chargers were able to grind out a 103-91 victory on Saturday, despite a career day from sophomore Ben Boudreau, who one-upped his career high set last game by scoring 25 points.
The first half featured lots of offense, as the teams combined to score 101 points and made 37 55 shots in the opening period. Junior Myles Simon scored the opening basket, though Briar Cliff scored eight straight points to go up 8-2. Freshman Maverick Binder and junior David Ogunlade drilled back-to-back threes, then after a Charger three-point play, Boudreau scored and Simon completed a three-point play to go back up at 13-12 at the 15:10 mark.
The run was not over for the Broncos as Boudreau hit his first three, and sophomore Hunter Hill responded to a Charger three with a two of his own. Binder concluded the 13-3 run with a three to go ahead 21-15. Most of the rest of the half would remain within one possession, with junior John Barnhill scoring seven points, including a three-point play to help keep Hastings close, eventually pulling them ahead 40-38 with 4:44 to go.
With the game tied at 41, Briar Cliff got a quick 5-0 run to lead 46-41 with 2:15 left in the half. After a timeout, Boudreau answered back with a three-pointer and drilled another from downtown after a couple of Charger free throws. Hastings was able to get a stop defensively and Boudreau's heat check on a stepback three was pure to put them up 50-48. Briar Cliff closed the half with a three-pointer to end the half with the lead at 51-50.
Both teams shot over 60 percent in the opening 20 minutes, with Briar Cliff at 69 percent and Hastings at 66 percent. They each also shot over 50 percent from three, combining for 16 threes. Boudreau hit four first half threes, leading the Broncos with 18 points and four assists in the first half.
Hastings hung tight early in the second half, taking a three-point lead on their opening play of the second off on a basket from Binder, then getting a two from Boudreau. Hastings' final lead of the game was at 58-57 at the 17:05 mark on a bucket from Hill. A 10-3 run over the next couple of minutes would turn the tide of the game, giving Briar Cliff the momentum they needed.
Free throws from Barnhill and Ogunlade, as well as a jumper from junior DaRon Hall kept Hastings within a couple of scores, but a Briar Cliff three at the 11:37 mark pushed the lead to seven and they ended up stretching the lead to 13 with 9:31 to go.
The Broncos were never able to recover from that run, though they did cut the lead to 10 late in the game with 90 seconds left after trailing by 17, thanks to threes from Boudreau and Binder, as well as a basket from Ogunlade. Ultimately the Chargers would dribble it out to win 103-91.
Hastings managed to still shoot 56 percent in the second half, but turned it over nine times and allowed Briar Cliff to shoot 65 percent in the period. For the game, Hastings outrebounded the Chargers, 28-19 and won the second chance points battle, 11-2.
