Women's Basketball Routs Friends in First Round of NAIA Tournament
(Wichita, KS) – In a rematch from a double-overtime game from earlier in the season, Hastings returned to Wichita to take on Friends in the first round of the NAIA National Championship, blowing them out 104-75.
(Wichita, KS) – In a rematch from a double-overtime game from earlier in the season, Hastings returned to Wichita to take on Friends in the first round of the NAIA National Championship, blowing them out 104-75.
Friends jumped out to a 9-2 lead at the 6:17 mark, then Hastings scored eight straight points to take a 10-9 lead, with sophomore Ann Bose scoring four of the points. Senior Macy Bryant hit two triples later in the first period, as the Broncos took a 24-18 lead after one.
Leading by four, Bose drilled a three to extend the lead to seven early in the second in what turned out to be the start of a 12-0 run. Junior Bailey Kissinger had four points during the run and with the score at 38-24, sophomore McKenna Yates scored the next five Hastings points to put them up 18. The Broncos took a 47-28 lead into the halftime break.
The Falcons opened the third with an and-one, but two Bryant three-pointers and four points by Kissinger put them up 57-31 with 7:30 left. Leading 57-35, Bose drilled a three, as Hastings led by 24 halfway through the quarter. They went up 30 a couple minutes later on a three by sophomore Adyson Mlnarik. She scored 11 more quick points, including three triples shortly after, as they led 83-39 going to the fourth after her buzzer-beating three.
Bose and Kissinger scored early in the fourth to take an 88-41 lead. Friends later got back within 37 with six minutes left, then Mlnarik hit her fifth three of the half. Sophomore Jentri Marx drilled a three to get to the century mark and go back up forty. Friends made the score closer in the end, as Hastings won 104-75.
Hastings shot 45 percent from the field and 42 percent from three, making 15-36. Friends shot 44 percent from the field and were 10-20 from three. The Broncos forced 30 turnovers and scored 34 points off of them. The Hastings bench outscored Friends, 45-17.
Mlnarik had 19 points off the bench, making 5-7 threes, with two steals. Kissinger added 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Bryant contributed 16 points, all coming in the first half, and four rebounds. Bose had 12 points and five rebounds, while senior Mariyah Avila had 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Yates was also in double-figures, finishing with 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
Up next, Hastings will play #14-seed Texas A&M-San Antonio, who beat #3-seed Corban, 94-82, tomorrow at 2pm in Wichita, KS.
