Women's Basketball Falls at Dakota Wesleyan in GPAC Semifinals
(Hastings, NE) – Entering today, #3-seed Hastings came in winners of 10 of their last 11 games, with their lone loss occurring at #2-seed Dakota Wesleyan on Jan. 31. The Tigers outscored the Broncos by 14 in the first quarter and went on to win 86-68 in the GPAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
(Hastings, NE) – Entering today, #3-seed Hastings came in winners of 10 of their last 11 games, with their lone loss occurring at #2-seed Dakota Wesleyan on Jan. 31. The Tigers outscored the Broncos by 14 in the first quarter and went on to win 86-68 in the GPAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Josilyn Miller and junior Bailey Kissinger scored the first two baskets to go up 5-0, but Dakota Wesleyan responded with a 13-0 run over the next three minutes. Trailing 19-15 after a jumper by sophomore Ann Bose, the Tigers ended the quarter on a 12-2 run and took a 31-17 lead.
In the second quarter, senior Mariyah Avila and sophomore Jentri Marx scored Hastings' first seven points of the quarter, getting the lead down to 12. The Tigers were able to keep the lead in double-digits the whole quarter and while sophomore McKenna Yates had four points in the final minute of the half, Dakota Wesleyan led 49-36 at the half.
The Tigers went up 17 at the 8:44 mark of the third quarter, then after five quick points by Hastings, Dakota Wesleyan went up 19 four minutes in. The lead grew to 21 near the end of the third and they took a 70-48 lead into the fourth quarter.
Miller and Bose hit threes early in the fourth and Hastings got the lead down to 18 on a couple of occasions, but couldn't get closer until Bose got a steal and layup at the 2:59 mark to get within 16. Kissinger later made it 82-68 on an and-one finish, but the Tigers ended the game with a 86-68 win.
For the game, Dakota Wesleyan shot 63 percent from the field and 46 percent from three. Hastings shot 35 percent from the field and 29 percent from three. Dakota Wesleyan outrebounded the Broncos 41-23 and outscored Hastings in the paint, 38-26.
Miller finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Kissinger had 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Bose came off the bench to contribute 16 points and five rebounds.
