Softball Rallies Late in Game 2 to Earn Split at Morningside
(Forest City, IA) – The Hastings College Broncos took on the Morningside Mustangs in a double header that resulted in a 9-0 loss in game one, and a 5-3 win in game two.
(Forest City, IA) – The Hastings College Broncos took on the Morningside Mustangs in a double header that resulted in a 9-0 loss in game one, and a 5-3 win in game two.
The Broncos and the Mustangs remained tied until the bottom of the second inning, when Morningside took the lead by scoring the first two runs of the game, bringing the score to 2-0.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Morningside added five more runs, resulting in a final score of 7-0 after five innings. The Mustangs held the Broncos to two hits in game one.
In game two, the Mustangs started the game off by getting the first run in the bottom of the first inning. The Broncos did not respond until the top of the fourth inning with junior Katyn Kappler singling through the right side, junior Ana Medeiros advanced to third, and junior Lauren Lee crossed home plate. Following, Medeiros scored on an error, making the score 2-1.
The Mustangs came back with a rebuttal in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring two more runs, making the score 3-2.
In the top of the seventh inning, sophomore Kaylee Pinneo hit a single through the right side that bounced underneath the second baseman's glove, allowing senior Lauren Schneider to advance to third and seniors Isabel Tanabe and Nicole Halsey to cross home plate on the play, bringing the score to 4-3. Next, junior Lauren Lee hit a fly ball to right field, resulting in senior Angelina Lockhart advancing to second and Schneider scoring, increasing the score to 5-3.
Morningside had a chance to answer back in the seventh and had runners on first and second with one out, but freshman Kassidy Beavers retired the next two batters to escape with the 5-3 win. Kappler, Schneider, and Medeiros led the way offensively with two hits each, while Pinneo's go-ahead hit in the seventh gave her a team-high two RBIs. Beavers pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Coming up next, the Broncos take on the Mount Marty Lancers on Wednesday, April 9, in Yankton, SD, for a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
