Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College football team ran into a buzz saw as No. 1 Morningside defeated the Broncos 70-17 on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs didn't take long to get on the board after forcing Hastings to punt on its first drive. Morningside went 82 yards on just four plays to find the end zone and the early 7-0 lead.
Then if things were not bad enough, on the Mustangs' next drive, Joe Dolincheck connected with Austin Johnson and as he was spun around inside the five, it appeared as though Johnson fumbled around the two before crossing the goal line where Chris Paitz picked it up and headed in the other direction. But the line judge signaled touchdown even to the dismay of the broadcast team of Morningside. Everyone was stunned after the refs got together and still ruled it a touchdown for the Mustangs. And from there, the route was on.
Morningside scored eight first half touchdowns all through the air and led Hastings 56-10 en route to its 70-17 victory.
The Broncos were able to get on the board at the end of the first when John Zamora connected with Jaishawn Wright for the 10 yard touchdown.
The Broncos picked up a Jason Bachle field goal late in the first half and then Brett Simonsen scored on a three yard reception from Zamora in the third quarter.
The Mustangs finished the game with 655 yards of offense with 508 coming through the air. Hastings finished with 243 yards of total offense.
Zamora finished the game going 19-for-41 for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Koby Brandenburg led the defense with nine total tackles while Carlo Terrell and Jayden Roberts each had seven total tackles.
Hastings is now 5-2 (4-2) on the year and will be back in action as Doane comes to town Saturday Oct. 15 with kickoff set for 1:00 pm on Lloyd Wilson Field.
