Football Comes Up Short Against Doane
Hastings- The Hastings College football team was unable to capitalize on key opportunities in what was a 13-7 dogfight with Doane at Lloyd Wilson Field on Saturday.
With 3:28 left in the first quarter, the Tigers (5-3,3-3 GPAC) found themselves ahead of the Broncos (5-4,2-4 GPAC) when Bryce Cooney kicked a 23-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
Hastings had the ball on the Doane 18 yard line in the beginning of the 2nd quarter, but two incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs.
The Broncos took another stab at the Tigers when they got the ball to the Doane 14 yard line, but was unable to get the clock to stop in time for one more play before halftime, keeping the Doane lead at 3-0.
In the start of the 3rd quarter, Doane was on the prowl, scoring three plays in to take a 10-3 lead over the Broncos. Doane struck again with a 28-yard field goal with 4:22 left in the third quarter to make it 13-0 in favor of the Tigers.
With :47 seconds left in the third quarter, Hastings started their only scoring drive, driving the ball to the 22-yard line before Anthony Cloyd (SR/Omaha, NE) connected with Noah Housh (SR/Lincoln, NE) for a 22-yard receiving touchdown and a Tom Schnase (SO/Hastings, NE) PAT to get the Broncos within 6 of the Broncos.
Hastings showed promise on their final drive of the game, getting to their 49-yard line before the pass from Clark Livingston (JR/San Juan Capistrano, CA) to Rashaad Shamburger (JR/Woodland Hills, CA) was intercepted within a minute left of the game.
Despite the loss, Hastings outgained Doane 472-to-399 yards. The Broncos were led offensively by Tahj Willingham (JR/Greenwood Village, CO) and Housh, who gained 141 and 55 yards, respectively.
Next for the Broncos is a road trip to Fremont to take on the Midland Warriors on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
