Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team picked up a much needed split with Northwestern on Friday afternoon dropping game one 3-2 before winning game two 6-2 out at Duncan Field.
Things looked good early on from a pitching standpoint through the first two innings for the Broncos as James Velasquez was having little trouble with the Red Raider offense. But an undisclosed injury took Velasquez out of the game in the third and Northwestern took full advantage scoring all three of its runs on five hits and also left the bases loaded.
Cooper Gierhan came in and kept Hastings in the game and the Bronco offense finally got on the board in the fifth without recording a hit. Brody Severin led the inning off with a walk and Antonio Rigney moved him to second with a sac bunt. Severin then moved to third on a passed ball and later scored on a Tristan Martinez groundout to make it 3-1.
Northwestern would threaten in the top of the sixth getting runners into scoring position with no outs but Gierhan picked up two strikeouts and a ground out to end the threat.
The Broncos finally saw a different pitcher in the sixth as HC did not get a hit off starter Dylan Kirkeby but looked to ruin a save chance for Ryan Reynolds. Matt Lucero picked up the first hit of the game when he singled to left with one out. Lucero then moved to second on a wild pitch. Then Dylan Otto reached on a wild throw from the third baseman which opened the door for Lucero to score from second but he hesitated midway to home and that cost him as he would get thrown out at the plate.
Tyler Welsh then singled to center to plate Otto to make it a 3-2 game but that would be all Hastings could muster in the inning. Hastings couldn't get much going in the bottom of the seventh dropping game one 3-2.
Cole Peterson was on the hump for game two and certainly had his best outing of the year going 6.0 innings giving up two runs on just two hits while striking out four.
With Peterson dealing, it would be one big inning that would prove to be all the offense HC would need as Mason Masur got things going when he smashed a two run home run over the 370 sign in left field in the fourth inning. Hastings wasn't done as Welsh picked up a one out double down the right field line. The Broncos then loaded the bases as Jace Valdez hit a liner that landed just inside the right field line that cleared the bases to make it 5-0. Jaden Stone brought Valdez home with a single through the left side as Hastings led 6-0.
Leading 6-2 heading to the seventh, head coach Joel Schipper went to his bullpen and Jaden Driscoll went a solid 2.0 innings giving up just one hit to get the game into the ninth. Danny Wisor came in and struggled a bit at first but settled in getting a pop out, a strikeout and a fly out to end the game as the Broncos earned the split winning game two 6-2.
Stone led the way at the plate going 3-for-5 while Valdez went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Masur went 2-for4 with two RBIs..
Hastings is now 11-21 (5-7) on the year holding on to the eighth spot in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Broncos will now host Morningside in a doubleheader on Saturday Apr. 8 with first pitch set for 1:00 pm out at Duncan Field in Hastings, NE.
