Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team was swept by Jamestown 12-4 and 13-11 on Saturday afternoon out at Duncan Field.
Things got off to a great start against the Jimmie's top pitcher as Jaden Stone earned a one out walk and then Tyler Kissler ripped a shot into left center to put runners in scoring position with one out. After Eli Merritt got beaned to load the bases, Dylan Otto picked up a two RBI single followed by a RBI single from Brody Severin as the Broncos held a 3-0 lead.
Then the Jimmie bats came to life scoring all 12 of its runs over the next four innings and ran away with game one 12-4.
Otto led they way in game one going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hastings managed just five hits in the game one loss.
Game two felt like it was a game that was never going to end as the Broncos got off to yet another quick start as Tristan Martinez singled to center in the second inning to plate Otto and Mason Masur for the 2-0 lead. That lead grew to 3-0 in the third as Merritt put the ball in play and reached on a throwing error by the first baseman allowing Valdez to score from second.
Then Jamestown exploded for six runs in the fourth to take a brief 6-3 lead. Hastings wasn't done as Valdez picked two RBIs on a single in the fourth and then the Broncos opened up a four run lead by plating six in the fifth. Masur picked up two RBIs with a double to left center. Valdez picked up a RBI ground out and then pinch hitting Tyler Welsh singled home two runs as HC now led 11-7. But with this being a nine inning affair, it felt like 11 runs was not going to be enough.
The pitching started to fall off for Hastings as Jamestown scored six unanswered runs as the Bronco bats went quiet the rest of the way dropping game two 13-11.
Valdez led the way at the plate going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Lucero had a great game at the plate going 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Martinez also went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Hastings falls to 8-16 (2-2) on the year and will be back in action Sunday Mar. 26 for two more games against Jamestown with first pitch set for noon out at Duncan Field.
