(Hastings, NE) - The Morningside Mustangs defeated the Hastings Broncos 3-0 (20-25, 14-25, 23-25) on Saturday afternoon.
Hastings led 10-8 in the opening set, but the Mustangs scored 13 of the next 16 points to take a 21-13 lead. The Broncos cut the lead to 24-20, but Morningside closed out the set 25-20.
Morningside jumped out to a 7-2 lead to begin the second set. Hastings countered with a couple of kills from freshman Mikah O'Neill and senior Majesta Valasek to make it 12-9. Like the first set, Morningside went on a run after that, winning eight of the next 10 points. Trailing 20-11, Hastings won the next three points on errors from the Mustangs, but Morningside regrouped and won the next five points to take the second set, 25-14.
Hastings led just about all of the third set, never trailing until 24-23, which the Mustangs converted to take the third set 25-23. Hastings had a better hitting percentage than Morningside (.140 to .125) and Valasek and O'Neill both had three kills in the set to give the Broncos the lead, but the Mustangs rally was just enough.
Valasek led the team with nine kills, followed by O'Neill with eight. Junior Alexis Pontine led the team with 11 assists, along with nine from junior Kinzi Havranek. Senior Miriam Miller led both teams with 22 digs.
Up next, Hastings will host Bellevue on Tuesday, Oct 1 at 7pm in Lynn Farrell Arena.
