Men's Wrestling Shows Well at York Open
York, NE – The Hastings College men’s wrestling team did something that is very rare in school history as the Broncos had a wrestler place at almost every weight class at the York Open on Saturday.
York, NE – The Hastings College men's wrestling team did something that is very rare in school history as the Broncos had a wrestler place at almost every weight class at the York Open on Saturday.
Jake Patterson was the top performer as he won the title at 157 as he quickly dismissed Coy DeBoer of Northwestern via pin just :57 into the match. That moved him into the title match where he faced off against teammate Braydon Forehand where Forehand took the forfeit to finish second. Forehand began his day by beating Kyan Ensign of Colby via pin at the 2:45 mark and then beat teammate Alex Alcala in the semis via pin at the 2:45 mark.
At 174 Naim Abeuljubean opened his day with an 18-7 major decision over Ky Bandy of Northwestern and came back with a 19-9 major decision win over Thomas Vance of Northwester to move into the title match. There he lost a very tough decision 11-10 to Cole Rutter of Northwestern to finish second.
At 125 Jordan O'Connor may have lost his first match but then worked his way through the consolation bracket by first pinning Jason Bias of York and then earned a major decision by defeating Hunter Sanchez of Colby 12-0. He then moved into the consolation final where he would lose to Marco Herrera of Colby to finish fourth.
At 133 Creel Weber won his first match 7-4 over Case Cauthron of Northwestern but would lose in the semis to move into the consolation bracket. There he picked up a 15-5 major decision over Jonathon Taylor of York before losing to Jarrdarrio Goolsby of Colby to finish fourth.
Sebastian Macedo would also finish fourth in his bracket at 141 as he began his day by pinning Andy Garza of York at the 5:27 mark. After losing in the semifinals, he moved into the consolation bracket where he defeated teammate Logan Hackman due to injury and would lose in the third place match to Julian Murafo of York.
At 149 Nicholas Freeland would lose his first match but defeated Sam Minton who was wrestling unattached via pin and then pinned Kevin Perez of York just :51 into the match to place fifth.
At 184 Cannon O'Connor picked up a win over Lorenzo Esparza of York via pinfall at the 1:09 mark which allowed him to place third.
At 197 Trevor Leon began his day with a pin over John Taber who was wrestling unattached and moved into the consolation bracket where he would eventually finish fourth after losing the rematch to Taber.
Matheson Rodriguez moved into the semifinals at 285 by defeating Deon Graves via pinfall before moving to the third place match after losing to Tanner Hawkins of York. There he lost to Chris Bessard to finish fourth.
The Broncos will be back in action Saturday Nov. 11 heading south to take part in the Falcon Open down in Wichita, KS.
