Hastings, NE – The Hastings College football team took a tough loss to Concordia 44-23 on Saturday afternoon out on Lloyd Wilson Field
The Bronco offense struggled to get things going early on while the Bulldogs found its stride from its opening drive and opened up a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Hastings was able to put together a nice 11-play 67-yard drive highlighted by a 37-yard pass from Carson Kudlacek to Will Austin where it looked like Austin may have crossed the goal line before his knee hit but the referee said he was down at the one yard line. Hastings would settle for a 24-yard field goal to get on the board late in the first quarter trailing 14-3.
The Bronco defense would then force a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense and Kudlacek went back to work. After a pass interference moved the ball down to the CUNE 25, Hastings moved the ball to the 12 before Kudlacek hit Ethan Wilborn for a 12-yard strike to make it 14-10 early in the fourth quarter.
Again the Bronco defense forced a three-and-out as the Bronco offense moved the ball into plus territory but were facing a fourth-and-nine from the Concordia 29. Wilborn beat his defender down the sideline as Kudlacek connected with him in the end zone for the touchdown as Hastings took the lead 16-14 after the extra point was missed.
The Hastings defense would get another stop on the next possession but the ensuing punt would be muffed as Concordia recovered at the Bronco 34. From there CUNE took over and picked up a field goal to take a 17-16 lead into halftime.
The game flipped on its head early in the third quarter when Hastings would recover a fumble following a muffed punt and moved the ball down to the Bulldog 1-yard line but tried to settle for an 18-yard field goal but the snap was not clean and the kick was no good as Hastings still trailed 17-16.
CUNE took over and took just four plays to move 80-yards to score and go up 24-16 with 7:59 to go in the third.
Hastings was forced to punt and it was the Bulldog offense that moved the ball 86-yards on 12 plays to go up 31-16 with :52 go to in the third.
After the Bronco defense would get a stop, disaster struck once again as Brett Simonsen was taken down in the backfield and fumbled as Concordia scooped and scored to go up 38- 16 as the momentum completely changed.
After getting the ball back at its own 41, Kudlacek found Wilborn open down the sideline for a 59-yard touchdown as the Broncos cut the deficit to 15 at 38-23 with 12:41 to go in the fourth.
The Broncos would get the ball back and move the ball 56-yards into the red zone but would get stranded at the nine and turn it over on downs and from there it was all Concordia.
Hastings finished with 411 yards of offense while Concordia had 460.
Kudlacek finished the game gong 30-for-50 for a career high 368 yards, three touchdowns and a pick. The 50 pass attempts breaks the school record of 49 set by Roger Bingman back in 1992. Wilborn finished with a career high eight catches for 161 yards and three scores which ties the school record with Jordan Johnson (2016) and Marc Boerigter (1999).
Jayden Roberts finished the game with 13 total tackles while Layton Shaw finished with nine and Harrison Udeh and Marcus Dustin finished with seven.
Hastings is now 3-5 (2-5) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 21 hitting the road to take on Mount Marty with kickoff set for 1:00 pm up in Yankton, SD.
