Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team took on Dakota Wesleyan in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon out at Duncan Field on an extremely windy afternoon as the Broncos dropped game one 4-0 before winning game two 3-1.
The Broncos struggled to get its offense going in game one mustering just three hits against starter Mitchell Sand.
Lane Harris pitched a solid game giving up three runs on six hits while striking out seven Tigers but just couldn't get the offensive support as he dropped his record to 2-4 on the year.
In game two the offense sprung to life in the second inning as Mason Masur started the inning with a one out single followed by a walk to Tristan Martinez. Then Eli Merritt hit a frozen rope down the right field line for a triple to put HC up 2-0. Merritt scored on the Ben Richter RBI ground out as HC held a 3-0 lead.
DWU would finally put a run on the board against starter James Velasquez in the fourth, but a strikeout ended the inning as the Broncos carried a two run lead into the fifth. Velasquez would face some trouble in the seventh as a single, a balk and an error put a runner at third with no outs. DWU tried a safety squeeze but third baseman Jared Delgado was running right next to the runner at third, fielded the ball and tagged him out to keep it 3-1. But the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs. Velasquez would get Caleb Meyers to hit a high bouncer right back to him and he would throw Meyers out by a step to preserve the two-run lead.
In came closer Cole Peterson as he had runners on first and second in the eighth but picked up a strikeout to end the threat. He then sat the Tigers down in order in the ninth as Hastings picked up its second conference victory 3-1.
Velasquez went 7.0 innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out a career high 10 Tigers. Peterson wen 2.0 innings giving up no runs on not his with three strikeouts while earning his third save of the season. Velasquez moves to 5-1 on the year.
Merritt led the way at the plate gong 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Hastings is now 10-24 (2-12) on the year and will be back in action Sunday Apr. 7 as they will play two more against Dakota Wesleyan with first pitch set for 1:00 pm out on Duncan Field.
