Bio
Coach Mahoney begins his second year as the director of track and field after ten years at the head of the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs. During his first 11 seasons leading the cross country and track & field teams Coach Mahoney’s athletes have produced 148 All-Americans and 11 National Champions. Coach Mahoney has also been named the GPAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the year during this time. His teams have finished on the podium (top 4 finish) three times at the national championship meet.
The Hastings College women’s cross country teams have qualified for the national championship meet four times under Coach Mahoney's leadership. Mahoney’s women’s cross country runners have produced the top 4 individual times in school history, including Lauren Shomaker’s school record. Additionally, his teams hold the top 5 team average times in school history.
Coach Mahoney led the women’s track & field team to its best finish in school history, finishing 4th place at the 2014 Outdoor National Championship Meet. Coach Mahoney's women have earned multiple All-American honors in the 5K and 10K and set conference records in the 10k. He has coached All-Conference finishers in every mid-distance and distance event including relays in both indoor and outdoor track & field. He has also coached multiple All-Americans in the 800m, 5K, and 10K. During Coach Mahoney’s tenure, his women hold 26 Individual school records in indoor and outdoor track & field.
On the men’s side the Hastings College Cross country team continues to grow and improve. Lucas Keifer ran the 6th fastest time in school history and was All-GPAC for Cross Country in 2016.
On the track Coach Mahoney's men have earned All-Conference honors in the 4x800, 1000, mile, 3K, and 5K indoors, and the 4x800, 1500, 5K, and 10K outdoors. He has produced the school’s first All-American in the men's race-walk and his athletes have broke the school record in the 3K race-walk, DMR, and 4x800 relays as well as set the conference records for the 4x400 relay both in indoor and outdoor track & field. Men competing during Coach Mahoney’s time as head coach currently hold 12 school records in indoor and outdoor track & field.
Coach Mahoney has coached multiple men and women to top 10 times in school history in the half-marathon as well as several national qualifiers on both the men's and women's side in the marathon.
Coach Mahoney holds USA Track & Field Level II coaching endorsements in endurance, sprints/hurdles/relays, jumps, and throws. He is also a USATF certified Level I instructor. Currently Coach Mahoney has previously taught coaching track & field theory classes at Hastings College and the University of Nebraska.
Prior to joining Hastings College, Coach Mahoney spent 11 years building Lincoln (NE) Southwest High School’s Cross Country and Track and Field programs. At Southwest, he coached 11 individual state champions in various events. His teams won a total of 20 City, Conference, and District championships. As Head Coach at Lincoln Southwest and Assistant Coach at Lincoln Southeast – a position he held from 1998-2002, he led seven cross country and track and field teams to state championships. In 2009, the Sportscasters Club gave him the Ralph Beechner Coach of the Year Award. Also in 2009, Ryan earned the Miliken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 2009 for his performance in the classroom. Ryan graduated with high distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) with a BS in Secondary Education and earned an MA in Historical Studies from Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Coach Mahoney has over 15 years experience coaching youth track & field. He has served as an official at three Junior Olympics and as regional coordinator at two USATF Regional Championships. He has coached numerous athletes in various events to Regional Championships and Junior Olympic medals. His specialties have been the hurdles and the multi-events.
In his spare time coach Mahoney enjoys playing various sports, running road races, hiking, hunting, and travel. He has traveled to 41 states and over 20 countries in Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean.
