Broncos Blanked by Midland
Fremont, NE - After missing a week of practice due to COVID-19, the Hastings College football team fell 43-0 to Midland on Saturday afternoon.
It was a game where it felt like the Broncos were feeling the effects of missing a week of practicing and then only having a week to prepare for a solid Midland squad as the Hastings offense struggled to do much of anything in the first quarter.
Unfortunately for Hastings, it only took Midland two plays to strike when Keenan Smith broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors the early 8-0 lead just :36 seconds into the game.
With the Bronco offense struggling, Midland opened up a 22-0 lead before back-up quarterback John Zamora (SO/San Antonio, TX ) seemed to light a fire to the Hastings offense. Zamora connected with Keioty Stenhouse for a 17-yard gain plus a roughing the passer penalty moved the ball to the Midland 46.
After a pass interference penalty against the Warriors, Zamora connected with Brenton Bell (JR/San Diego, CA) as it appeared he was down at the Midland 10-yard line but the call on the field was he fumbled as Midland recovered. Just three plays later, Midland quarterback River Walker connected with Darrin Gentry for the 46-yard score as Hastings trailed 29-0 at halftime. From there, the Broncos were unable to get much else going taking the loss 43-0.
Zamora finished the game 18-for-35 for 159 yards and an interception while rushing for 77 yards on 15 carries. Bell led the receivers with 56 yards on seven receptions.
Keyuntea Kinney (SR/Marietta, TX) finished the day with six total tackles including three tackles for loss and two sacks. Sevon Roberson (SO/Houston, TX) led the defense with seven total tackles and a sack.
Hastings moves to 1-3 (1-3) and will have a bye week before hosting Briar Cliff Saturday Oct. 24 with kick-off set for 1:00 p.m. on Lloyd Wilson Field.
