Crete, NE - The Hastings College baseball team put up a good fight against the best team in the Great Plains Athletic Conference but ended up being swept by Doane losing game one 10-8 before losing game two 17-7 (8 innings) on Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind 5-0 in game one, Hastings managed to load the bases starting with a Thomas Hartman (FR/Littleton, CO) single, then Cory Koranda (SR/Lincoln, NE) was hit by a pitch and then Dylan Otto (FR/Littleton, CO) singled to short. This brought up Camden Brichacek (SR/Lincoln, NE) as he blasted the Aaron Forrest offering over the left field fence for the grand slam making it a 5-4 ball game.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the third, the Bronco offense went back to work as Koranda picked up a RBI single up the middle and then Tyler Welsh (FR/Tucson, AZ) doubled to left to score Hartman to tie the game 6-6.
The Tigers would score the next four runs to take a 10-6 lead into the seventh but the Broncos kept fighting picking up a run on a James Velasquez (FR/Sahuarita, AZ) RBI groundout and then Connor Pfundt (FR/Lincoln, NE) scored on a balk to make it 10-8. Unfortunately, Hartman would pop out to end the game with the Broncos losing 10-8.
Brichacek finished the game going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Otto finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In game two trailing 2-1 into the third, the Bronco offense came back to life as Hartman led off with a walk and Koranda singled on a bunt to bring up Otto. He took the Julian Vargas pitch and deposited it over the left field fence for a three run home run to give Hastings a 4-2 lead. HC continued to threaten and with runners on first and second with two outs, Cole Staab (SR/Kearney, NE) came up with a single to center scoring Brichacek to make it 5-2.
Doane climbed right back to tie the game 5-5 heading to the fifth and Brichacek roped a ball to left center as it too cleared the fence for a solo shot giving the lead right back to the Broncos at 6-5 heading to the sixth. Unfortunately, Doane got its bats going scoring eight runs on six hits breaking the game open and eventually bringing the run rule into effect in the eighth.
Brichacek finished game two going 3-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored. For the day he went 6-for-8 with two home runs and five RBIs.
Hastings will be back in action Sunday Apr. 24 as Doane comes to town to wrap up the four game series with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. out at Duncan Field in Hastings, NE.
